Difference between a BREAK and a BREAK AWAY?

I have been watching pro racing for quite some time, and I hear some commentators say there is a break, and then turns into a breakaway. If that is correct, when does a break become a break away?

Its the same difference as a Home Run vs Homer, Slam Dunk vs Dunk, etc.

I suppose one can argue that a break is when something is establishing, when the group is fighting hard to gain some ground on the peloton. a breakaway may refer more to a group that has already established a desirable gap, and has settled down a bit to keep that pace.

I was gonna say that too, but it felt like a meta-argument.

When this thread was posted I thought "This really only needs one response, but will probably devolve in to some weird argument, and Doge will end up complaining about USAC's treatment of Jr's."

Purely for your entertainment. Overall, it is much better being a junior cyclist.

I always call the first stage of a successful "attack" as "getting separation" or "a gap" or gapping them.

At some point the gap turns into a break. Personally, I tend think of the gap becoming a break either when you lose sight of it up the road, or when the front of the peloton sits up and stops chasing.

Although technically, the whole point of the gap is to break the draft, which happens way before the attack has really succeeded or failed.
