Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I'm nowhere near retirement anyway, so I'm not really worried. Just seeing the massive drops in the past week has been "interesting". I wasn't invested in '07-'08, so this is my first time with skin in the game.

Even before leaving VA the last time, we'd been planning on going back down over Spring break to help her with things like visiting assisted living facilities (probably off the table at this point), finding a realtor to list the house (prolly not a hot market for sellers right about now, either), sort through possessions with down-sizing in mind, further consultation with estate planners, etc. Current events obviously complicates this quite a bit and her health is a concern (she's not the most robust, but has been mostly self-quarantined for years).

I assume that we'd just pull the plug on the trip if any of us were symptomatic prior to the trip. The kids actually wore masks and went through hand washing routines during the Christmas trip (father in law's immune system was compromised and the kids had come down with respiratory bugs), so we'd be ready to do that again, if necessary. We normally do like to get out while we're there, but I assume that social distancing protocols will be employed and that a lot of things won't be open, anyway.

Her time on this rock is limited, as is our time with her, so we want to be mindful of that, but at the same time we don't want to be the Outbreak monkey.
Best practice at this time is not to do it and if someone really has to go, it should just be one of you to reduce the risk to the mom. What's the real world answer? I'm staying out of that.

They have two big sales earlier in the year. The member appreciation sale and then a spring sale. At least the former comes with a coupon for 20% off one full-priced item. I want a new Showers Pass rain jacket. Retails for $220 or so and is never on sale. Wouldn't want to miss 20% off that.

Ugh. I think I missed the anniversary sale:

https://www.rei.com/h/anniversary-sale

Strike that. Member sale starts on Friday. 2020 Anniversary sale is in May. Phew. Good thing I don't need to try things on for size since their stores are closed until 3/27.

Ah. I didn't see that, either. At least it says to check back in May!

No. If you tell her, that means you don't get the full 200 to spend when it's your turn.

If you are buying something full price, I don't think there is really any difference. You get a 20% off coupon for a full priced item to use during either. As for things on sale, I would bet the items are different during the two.

Our lovely Gov. Just killed our restaurant/bar bidness. Oh and 50 cases state wide according to the same article. I'd like to know what they're basing that# on.

I tried to go to court and got turned away. Court is closed. Sounds like there was an outbreak at the jail.

Is it too soon to panic? I had planned a trip to REI today for trail shoes. Good thing I checked their web site because they are closed for the foreseeable future. My minor transaction of $100 multiplied by, say, 100,000,000 people adds up to $10,000,000,000 just for today. But all sorts of cancellations are taking place in sports, conventions in addition to the more normal flow of goods and services and that total erasure in the economy has to be in the trillions. The last time the economy took such a hit, people were jumping out of tall buildings. One of our clients at the boatyard where I used to work and for whom we had built a custom 65' power boat, shot himself dead leaving a wife and two kids to deal with the aftermath. Our current situation has the potential to be even more ugly. I hope not but I'm bracing for the worst.

The member sale starts Friday, so if you can order on line you should wait anyway in case what you want is full price.

I think there's reason to be alarmed. I'm a pretty optimistic guy, but there's a good chance this is going to be a big ******g mess.

Well, our group rides are off. Personally, I think that's a step too far, but what do I know?

Just got off a call with Institute leadership. No clear instructions from above on who comes in and who stays home, what to do about new hires, and many other thorny issues. People suspect political fears and the info clearance process at the Department level. Anyone who opens their mouth without very high cover risks terrible consequences.

Sent in an exposure questionnaire to Occupational Medicine. The way it reads, I think I'm going to be expected to come in. I am also officially Tier 1, which means I'm supposed to be present or accessible in any emergency.

My new office is our "family" room and I had to Swiffer extensively before I could get any work done. The morning light revealed a world of cobwebs and crap under the furniture.

Bad time to be stuck in jail, even without the health concerns.

Just got a call this morning saying my hernia surgery scheduled for Friday is cancelled. BD is not real happy about that because the discomfort level has been increasing lately and a hernia has the potential of creating some very nasty complications, and who knows how long this pandemic will run. The way I see it the complications could alter my overall health to the point of making me very vulnerable to covid-19.

Not happy. Not happy at all.

There has been some eloquent writing recently on how quickly and totally we abandon the incarcerated in a situation like this. We are a cruel country.

It's better when they're having hearings and you've got a chance to get unstuck.

I bet our chief judge made the call yesterday after there were positive tests at the jail. The in-custody defendants appeared in courtrooms all last week. The public defenders visited their clients at the jail and then came to court. Big mess.

Terrible time to be set for trial. There's going to be an emergency release/bond modification process, I bet. Everyone gets a PR bond.
