Stupid speced bikes? Any better ones than this

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

At $2,000 plus hybrid titanium?

Titanium is great, but that's an awfully expensive hybrid isn't it? Are they really people out there who want such high-spec hybrids?

Based on specs and geometry, its a flat bar road bike.
Call it a hybrid i guess, but its a titanium frame carbon fork ultegra road bike with a flat bar.

I dont see a many flat bar road bikes, but I also don't look for them.

I don't see anything odd about it.
Is their some "roadie rule" that you can't have a nice bike with flat bars?

I agree, nothing odd about that bike.

Cannondale make something similar but in carbon fiber and it's spendy. Though I wouldn't never call these bikes hybrids, they are flat bar road bikes. Pinarello also make a flat bar aluminum wonder bike.

The wheelset uses cheap hubs, and the brakes aren't Ultegra level, but I would call either of those choices "stupid".

At least the bike isn't spec'd with SRAM 1x.

Not stupid, but unusual: Trek used to make a carbon fiber, Gates Drive single speed with either straight or drop bars. I wanted one really badly. Still kind of want something similar - build it up really light, no chain maintenance. It would be pretty sweet.

I’d love to have that bike. I’ve already spent my money on the bikes that I have so I won’t buy it. But I think it is nice. It would be cool to take it for a test ride. Might make a deluxe greenway bike.

Why would I care if there are or aren't people wanting a certain type of bike at that price range? In many ways the few people wanting the bleeding edge of any thing have made yesterdays top tiers more affordable to the masses.

While titanium isn't exactly bleeding edge stuff, neither is carbon fiber. But both make a light bike. When carbon reaches it's zenith, maybe the more tedious production methods of titanium will get some brains working on solutions to work with it in ways that reduce production costs.

The listing has it marketed as a flat bar road/gravel bike. It takes up to 700x45c tires. In the world of titanium gravel and/or flat bar road bikes, this offering doesn't look a bit unusual.

Meh, I'd rather have one with a SRAM Automatix hub, properly adjusted, or a kick-back hub -- anything that isn't a single speed but doesn't require a hand-operated shifter.

Now, *that* would be properly stupid. If I'm gonna ride a flat bar road bike/megahybrid, that's that kinda stupid I want.

That's because there aren't any at the high end. It's awfully hard to get aero when you're upright on a hybrid.

As for being an adventure bike, I do a bit of that, and you either have flared drops for singletrack or for more technical stuff you need a flat bar with front suspension. I think bikesdirect must have got a deal on some of these components and put together this Frankenstein bike

Funny story...I ordered a custom gravel titanium frame for my wife, based on the geometry of a Canyon Grail. I discovered after ordering it that she was no longer about the drop bar life.... so we turned it into a flat bar bike with SRAM 1x, Shimano Saint brake levers/calipers, and maybe 50mm worth of spacers on the steerer. At the end of the day, she likes it a lot and that is her go-to bike over her other bike, a CAAD12.

The guy who runs BikesDirect is very smart, and he knows his market. For example, he used to list a number of aluminum track bikes that would have made great entry level bikes for velodrome racing. But when it became clear that the market was mostly young guys in skinny jeans who ride slowly around city streets and believe that steel is real, he switched to selling only steel track bikes.

The intersection of "flat bar," "titanium," and "Ultegra" apparently has some prospective customers. If not, the bike will disappear from the BikesDirect website sooner rather than later.

I don't believe in flat bar road bikes. It's like running clogs.

I don't see any problem in getting aero with a flat bar bike.
Set up with a good amount of drop and reach you can get as low as you want.
Many people ride their drop bar bikes almost exclusively on the tops and hoods.

Other brands sell this style of bike too(flat bar, carbon fork, disc brake, upper level road drivetrain). Below are a few of many offerings out there.

How about a $4800 Newsboy (and that price is just for frame&fork)?
