Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I always keep my eyes open for a continuously downhill route. Even better if it's all downwind as well.

Mo knows - much more fun to go downhill/downwind than uphill/upwind.

Wanted the Dfour for the Topstone, but LBS can't get the chainrings until freaking January. Was thinking about just going with Praxis, but figure I can wait to do it right. Stupid Shimano.

Curious to why you picked the topstone over the aspero. You probably already mentioned this.

It gets chilly to comfortably ride at 6,000 ft. Why bother going any higher?

I farking hate the paint jobs on it, and it's like over a grand more expensive than the Topstone. The Topstone frame is literally at the bike shop, in an acceptable color, as a bare frame to be built to spec. The Aspero would come with a bunch of junk I don't need or want, and then I'd have a nice fancy carbon gravel bike I don't want to get filthy. The Topstone is cheap alloy that I can put away wet, and the expensive/ nice bits (powermeter and wheels) can be repurposed if gravel doesn't click with me. Or it can be a rain bike.

And the geometry works, unlike most other gravel bikes.

I mean, when I was shopping to have something to go with AG on she asked that, but... yeah. And when I know what I like, I'm really comfortable with it. When I don't, there is endless hand-wringing, as many here can attest.

Oh, and it'll be nice to have the same frame as AG, so maintenance will be simplified.

Sounds like things are moving quickly - when are you expecting to take delivery?

With the Dfour, early January. AG’s wont be ready until late December, so she’ll just get back in the saddle with some park rides for a bit until mine is ready.

Is this going to be like the commercial where the wife jumps into the truck the husband bought for himself?

GMC.

Please - she makes more than I do. She can buy her own toys. And her employer literally gives her a "flex pot" of a pile of money for reimbursing personal growth expenses like these on top of that salary.

Also, she takes a small and I take a medium, so it'd be harder than with cars.

Yeah, I have also noted the dissociation between pad thickness and comfort.

When I got the Sirrus earlier in the year, mi esposa had to have the same thing because it was available in purple. Thankfully, she does not know the difference in component grade, etc. so when we got the road bikes it saved me about $1k to get her one in the color she liked.

That "flex pot" sounds like a pretty sweet deal. Where can my wife get a job that offers that? As it is, I still have to buy all the toys.

If I knew how to get one I'd have one myself.

Well, I suppose I do - it starts by getting an excellent degree in EE and overtopping people in the industry enough that you can get basically any job you interview for, then go interview at Arm. Hard plan to implement though.

Last couple rides on the mtb I got the "turkey warble" noise from the rear brake which had been quiet for 2+ years. I looked at the rotor, a big effort for me, and it looked very thin. At the lbs I picked up a new rotor and pads and swapped them today.
Just for giggles I got out the micrometer and measured the thickness of the new compared to the old. New rotor was .075 inch, or just under 2mm. Old rotor .030, or less than 1mm. Yikes.
