Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Yea, I have a hunch the wifey may not want to ride in this one with me either.... Has no AC, aluminum bucket racing seats, and very little insulation (neither acoustic or thermal).

There's a 2016 Focus Cayo AL with Ultegra 6800 2x11 on FB near me for $500. That seems to me like quite a deal. And for some reason in my mind I feel like the Focus will be faster. And also prob look cooler with the 50mm carbon wheels I have.

Talk me off the ledge. Tell me my Allez is fine and I don't need new(er) shinier things!
Steel is returning to the pro peloton. Too many riders have had enough with their bikes falling apart at dangerous moments. If you have "gotta replace" lust check out Waterford Racing models.

Hang out for carbon, till you can afford closer to $1k. Have you ridden a 7kg bike?

I have not. But I've always heard weight doesn't make all that much difference.

It doesn't make any real difference to how fast you go, but it makes a lot of difference to how much fun the bike is.

First, light tyres, tubes, rims. Then light seat, bars, levers, stem and so on.

... Also, you might be faster on a carbon bike simply because you get less fatigued from not having to lift your bum so much over bumps.

Just following up on this. I messaged the guy a few days back about it, and chatted about it a bit, asked him if he was negotiable, etc, etc. Told him I'd come check it out if i got some free time, and left it at that.

He messaged me yesterday afternoon out if the blue and said he'd take $400 if I'd come buy it that day....

So i bought it last night. It's in great shape except for a scuff on the right seat stay. Also, newer Ultegra shifts waaaaay better than the stuff on my Allez. Now I just have to ride it a bit and decide if I'm going to try to sell the focus for a profit, or keep it and sell the allez.

i bought a BMC road machine 01 but also prefered my old BMC SLC01 pro machine better because the frame didn’t crack at the seat post.

Are you saying your specific frame cracked at the seatpost, or that frame set in general had a reputation for cracking there? In either case, that seems like a solid reason to prefer the old frame....

Um, it it were me I would be buying that bike yesterday, provided it fit. Do it!
ps congrats on the new bike. I would definitely ride it enough times before you decide to resell it or keep it. That was a great deal indeed.

It is personal preference, but overall, I find I enjoy riding steel bikes more than other materials as well. Specing it with new materials (wheels and tires are the biggest bang for your buck performance change) can do wonders. I personally still like Thompson stems and seat posts for my bikes, but there is nothing wrong with adding carbon seatpost and cockpit to reduce weight as well. You can get quite a light frame by doing all of that, and have a ton fun.

I'm in the process of getting the Allez setup with a SRAM 1x11 drivetrain right now. Have a set of 50mm carbon wheels I may throw on it, but I really like the look of the Roval SL 25s I have also. We'll see.
