How do these pedals work?
So I don't have much experience with fancy pedals or cycling cleats. But a friend gave me two sets of pedals, pictured here:
Can anyone give me an idea as to how they work, what they're called, what they're worth, etc?

Speedplay on the top. You need compatible cleats and shoes that can accept those cleats. Never used them. Maybe someone else can add more.
Second pedal in an SPD style pedal. You need the two-bolt SPD cleats and shoes that can accept two-bolt cleats.

Why did your friend not supply the cleats with the pedals, or at least tell you what cleats are needed?

Speedplays work with a cleat that has a recessed area for the pedal to go into. They have TONS of float and feel like you're riding on an ice cube. I kinda liked them when I had them.
Shimano (and many others) have a smaller cleat that engages with the pedal. The float is more limited, but feels more secure to me.

Here is a picture of the same brand pedal but the race version showing the shoe attached to the pedal.
As others have already told you, you need shoes and the attached cleat to make them work. That's why I have at least one set of clipless pedals in my junk box after pulling them from a used bike.

If you don't want clipless pedals then just donate them to someplace that gives away bikes to those in need. A used pedal of any sort wouldn't be worth anything to me. Simply the same value the person that gave them to you felt them worth, nothing monetary and maybe just some friendship.

might be worth a thank you if you've wanted to try something out without much invested. Kinda where I sit with SdP. Wouldnt pass them up if the opportunity came about. It'd make investing in the proper shoes more justifiable for me.

I don't know anything about Speedplay other than the people who like them, really like them. The Shimano XTRs are great pedals: bombproof and reliable.
