Addiction 2021.2

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

It might be worth looking into if you can find a trustworthy person in your area who has the machine. It can be an alternative to surgery and it seems to work for some people. My clubmate/friend is a chiropractor and he does decompression now and he has helped other people in our club.

There is a joke about three physicians in a duck blind:

A bird flies over and the internist says, "could be a duck, but we must rule out goose, and, of course, there's a chance it's a very big sparrow," and by that time the bird is out of sight.

Another bird flies over and the radiologist raises his gun and says, "There's a silhouette against the sky, which likely represents a duck, suggest clinical correlation," and the bird is gone.

A bird flies over head, the surgeon fires immediately and says, "what the **** was that?"

Yes, that EMG/NCS should have been done first.

Yep. When it's cold (by CA standards) and wet, I might be on Zwift 4 days per week. Lately, it's been just one, and I will either do a structured workout or join one of the bot groups for an hour. The relentless steady pedaling is quite productive for fitness.

Today, we averaged a little under 19 overall, including a slow warmup, some slowing down to collect stragglers, and 1800' of vertical. However, at least half of us were over 60.

I need to figure out a way to charge admission to my home tomorrow. I could buy a new bike if this keeps up.

Is it correlated more with road surface roughness or pedaling action? I know you said it only happens when you pedal but is the noise at regular intervals or does it seem more random?

I had the end of a shoelace do that to me once. Drove me bonkers until I looked down and saw it bounce off the crankarm. Tick.......tick.......tick..... ...tick

Another good one was when my thigh would hit the seat bag and cause the contents to hit.. or the little plastic doodads on the zipper to strike the seat tube.. tink.....tink.....tink....

Had a noise like that on my steel bike with Ultegra bb. Wouldn't make the noise unless I was on the bike pedaling. Took the bb apart. It all looked good but after I regreased it the noise never came back.

Sounds too serious for me. I checked the Strava feed for my club, and looks like yesterday's ride was about 20MPH, 30 miles with about 1800 feet vertical. I would much rather drop it a notch and aim for 17-ish on a course like that.

Here's one that might be a bit of a stretch but hey I'm bored at work without much to do - your NDS picture of it in the water thread makes it look like the bolts that hold your littlest chainring on are about the same distance from the BB as the downtube coupler. Any chance one of them backed out and is touching the clamp on every rotation?

No correlation to the road, or how much power I am producing. It only makes the sound when I pedal. It used to be a quieter tap and it wasn’t every time I pedaled. Now it’s louder and constant. Checked the coupler, no play.
My shoes don’t have shoelaces.

Learned a bit of an expensive lesson about 50.4bcd chainring bolts that day...I'd heard blue threadlocker recommended for these kind of bolts and now I know why.

Had one fall out of a Campagnolo crankset and mtb cranks, too. I always use blue Loctite on them now.

I was hauling ass down hill yesterday and heard a clang, clang like something metal bouncing on the rocks. I just checked that my front disc rotor was still there, figuring that was the most important thing that: I could visually inspect on a trail while going 25 mph, would be likely to need on such a descent, and would make that sound.

Gladly no parts seemed to be missing upon a visual inspection at home.

Squeezed out for my last VA ride of Spring. Mostly easy, with a little sightseeing, and a few moments of fury. I keep missing out on targeted segment Top 10s, which is a) frustrating and b) a sign that there aren't as many strong riders here as there are in MN.

I probably over-torque the chainring bolts on my cranks, but hey, they're steel so they can take it

Dad and I were coming home one day, and the town had been surreptitiously working on the road, leaving a substantial bump which they didn't mark. *WHAM!!!!*, and then I watched as the right front hubcap passed us, and went off to go lie down in the bank parking lot. Of course, Dad sent me to fetch it later.
