Bottecchia Thread revival
Late 60's / early 70's Giro D'Italia, almost all original with exception of post and saddle. More to come, once I pick up a campagnolo 27.2 post to go along with the Cinelli saddle waiting.

Some great looking Bottecchia bikes. But I'm thought there would be more. There's not much talk about old Bottecchia bikes on these forums. Doesn't look like too many members have one.

I know I have posted this around the forum before, but here it is again. After input from the incredibly patient BikeForums members, I have narrowed it down to early 1980's. As for model, I still have no idea - hence I have since dubbed it the 'Arcana'.

Pretty much how mine looks today, put the factory wheels back on, replaced the Simplex with Campagnolo Valentino, found a correct stem (Mine was cracked) and wrapped the bars in cotton.

A red/white 1987 Bottecchia Team which I bought as you see it 5 years ago. Columbus SLX, chrome fork, lugs and rear triangle, All Campagnolo C-Record, Campagnolo Cobalto brakes, Cinelli bar and Deda stem, original C-Record pedals, Ambrosio aero clincher rims, No chips, dents or rust.

The rides are similar but the red&white is more responsive and corners crisper.
The red&white has one degree steeper fork and seat tube angle, less bend in the fork, and a shorter rear triangle.
The red&white is about a pound lighter.
Neither has a harsh ride.
The C-record drivetrain and brakes are just plain smoother.
Love them both but I could tell them apart while blindfolded.
I've ridden the blue one about 40k miles and the red&white about 5k miles.

Ed, thanks for the compliment. Funny fact is that when my son was in high school I let him ride the blue 1972 at will around the neighborhood and to his friends houses. Luckily he was careful and respected it. He's 30 now and is a big fan of vintage bikes.

I have the taller 63cm version of that 68-72 Professional. Same blue paint, originally, but mine has been pretty much ruined, by chips gone wild, LOL, the paint doesn't seem like it ever stuck well on mine. It rides pretty nice, most likely Columbus SP in this size, but I much prefer the ride of my '71 Frejus, also Italian, but made from double butted Reynolds 531. That one has some "magic" in it, so the Bott hasn't seen the use it should.

So glad I found this thread! I stumbled into this Bottecchia on consignment at a LBS and grabbed it for $400. Based on catalogs I've been able to scrounge up on BF, it looks to be an '89 Cromor? I'm basing this on the SLX tubing and the chromed drive-side chain stay. Correct me if I'm wrong.
Sorry in advance for the grody pictures. I'm planning to get more on a sunny day after I give her a nice cleaning.
Notably, I found it with a full Shimano 600 groupset and DA hubs. It shifts and brakes well, so I'm in no hurry to track down an Athena group. Plus, it's a hard sell on the wife to replace working Japanese parts with working Italian parts "just 'cuz."

DLP, nice machine. The SLX on the BB shell indicates the tubes are Columbus SLX. On the downtube decal it says World Champion .... 89, so since they probably didn't change the decals in mid-year, it was probably built in 1990 or later. Great grab at that price. I won't tell you what I paid for my red&white one.

I added this questionable looking rig to my stable this summer for $40. I had been looking for an Italian bike on a budget which seems to be an oxymoron. I was intrigued by the chrome socks and lugs in the craigslist ad, and somewhat disappointed to find out how lowly the frame actually was. It has a faded De Luxe decal on the top bar, steel rims and stamped dropouts so my delusions of grandeur were quickly dashed. The Middlemore saddle is a hopeless wreck, garage art at best. Still, it has Universal center pull brakes and the chrome is pretty cool. The generator and lights are Schwinn spec stuff and may find their way to my Sport Tourer. It's also the first one of these I've seen with blue checker board decals instead of black. The Bot is patiently waiting a rebuild but I haven't decided which direction to go with it yet. The paint work is rough enough to merit a repaint in my opinion. I don't want to get carried away but I think I have a nice donor bike that can provide most major components to keep this in budget. I'm not sure of the year of manufacture but the latest decal I found says 1967 so it's at least a '68. I'd bet mid '70s realistically though.

A Bottecchia Professional in 59cm (and blue) is something I check eBay for every now and then...I had a 'Special' frame once, passed on a 54cm Professional and have liked them ever since.

Mine is in the condition I purchased it. It is a sad looking mutt! Although it is a Giro D'italia, it is likely to be adorned with Professional parts because I have them. The frames were the same with the parts contributing to the difference in price. The only component that will not be replaced is the unique HS.

I received this Bottecchia in the same purchase as the Colnago posted in the other thread.
I have no idea what vintage or model it is (anyone have a guess), but it's a LOT heavier than the Colnago, so it hasn't been on my radar much yet.
I think the drivetrain is Shimano 600.
