Ouch - Darn It
Planned on a long ride but not to be. Third rider in the rotation and the first guy takes a long pull into a stiff headwind. As he gets ready to pull off, checks his 6 and drifts right and sits up. I saw it coming and planned on passing the guy in 2nd as he isn't very strong so I was going to take a pull.
Unfortunately, number 2 wasn't paying attention and didn't expect such a quick decel (due to the headwind) when rider 1 sat up. 2 clips 1's rear wheel and starts to go down. I go hard left now and think I should be clear. Unfortunately, he flops his bike over on the left side, right in front of me. I am barreling down on his head. He sees me coming right for him and luckily rotates his face away from my wheel. I didn't even have time to try to bunny hop him and ran right over his helmet and neck, doing my best Greg Louganis right into the pavement. Barely had time enough to tuck my head and get some kind of a shoulder roll.
My favorite helmet, toast but saved my noggin big time.
Left a mark.
Nothing serious for either rider. Boy I hate crashes. Couple chunks missing here and there, road rash and big muscle soreness along the right side of my back.

So let me get this straight...you were riding in an unpredictable pattern (changing the rotation) because you thought someone in the group you were riding with was too weak and ended up in another group ride wreck?

Wow, low even for you Rob. Yes, it's my fault the guy in front of me crashed and fell right in front of me. Maybe you can ask Vince (the owner of Village Cyclesport) if it was my fault. Wow.

This is a group ride report so shouldn't it be in the racing forum?

Genetics have failed me
No, the 2nd rider in the rotation clipped the wheel of the frontman because frontman sits up into a headwind. Sounds more like the dude who sat up has some fault, because you just don't sit up and decelerate fast right after you pulled off and 2nd rider because he fell asleep at the wheel or was just to inexperienced.

Pretty much have it Scummer. I think 2 might have missed 1's signals he was coming off his long pull and instead tried to stay in the draft. The minute 1 sat up, the decel caught 2 off guard and that's all she wrote. I don't think it was 1's fault as I clearly saw the signals he was coming off (that's why I started to come out into the wind). 2 just wasn't paying attention IMO.

Ouch. Shame about the helmet, but the rest doesn't look so bad. You'll be ready to rock for ToAD no problem.
Ask Recursive about going through helmets. He got two of those crashes posted on YouTube last year!

Glad to see you're OK Tim. Heal up quickly.
Also nice to see that even though I rarely check in these days, that the playful banter and abject stupidity carries on.
Sigh, what is one to do?
