Sand and fatbike drivetrains
I was chatting to a shop bike mechanic yesterday whilst having my hybrid serviced. He was giving me his advice on drivetrain longevity and roughly when I should get my chain replaced depending on where I ride. He mentioned that riding my hybrid in sand will cause excessive wear on the chain in particular.
As fatbikes are assumed to be ridden in snow and sand, has anyone noticed premature chain wear on their fattie after riding in sand? I can understand the issue as the sand would grind down the chain.

I have done about 1,400 km with my current chain and most of that has been sandy conditions. No noticeable sign of wear as yet, but I don't have a replacement kilometre figure either to see if it is any noticeably different from my roadie or touring bike chain kilometres.

My Pugsley has 4,000 miles on the chain, I'll be changing the chain before the end of the month. This 4,000 includes winter roads with sand, salt, slush ... and this bike is my favorite gravel grinder.
This is the conditions from this year's Almanzo 100, needless to say, there was a lot of sand and grit spray on my chain.

I'm typically very OCD about chain cleaning, and I'd guess the stock chain on my Pug is more robust than the average chain.
