Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Sufferfest Videos & Headphones

OK...help me out you more experienced ones.

Two questions:

1. I recently signed up for Trainerroad, have it all working, have a big screen in front of my trainer, and downloaded Hell Hath No Fury from Sufferfest. Awesome. But for those that have many cycling videos, can you give me maybe your top 3 or 4. I'm gonna download some more, but curious what are the best....especially from among those that Trainerroad can sync up to. Or one to just watch and listen to during a general ride.

2. My trainer is the Lemond Revolution. Great except it's loud. Using my Bose Quiet Comfort headphones watching Sufferfest, I can't hear the trainer at all, which is great, but I don't want to ruin a $200 plus set of headphones riding a trainer while pouring sweat. Has anything worked for you guys in the noise reduction category without costing so much ? I would like to get Bluetooth, but it seems that category of headset with noise reduction would cost me hundreds.

Thank you for any advice.

I like them all but my favorites are Extra Shot / The Long Scream, The Wretched and Downward Spiral. There is No Try is also very good.

I have Bluetooth earbuds. They don't even begin to dampen the sound of my trainer.

Revolver is a great interval workout, but having just finished the Tour, I have to say that they are all just damn killer videos!! You can't go wrong.

I tried one of the "EPIC Ride" videos for Mt. Baldy and wrote a review of it recently here.

Honestly, I'd pass on it again. Not that the video was badly done (it wasn't), but it's not too interesting to watch a bunch of riders pedal at slow speeds up Mt Baldy, even with the nifty camera work changing angles. I ended up just ignoring the video entirely and focusing on the (very painful) sustained effort. I can barely even recall what that video had in it, come to think of it.

Surprisingly, Netflix videos work pretty well, even with threshold type work, as long as it's an upbeat/action movie. Was hammering away to Beowulf the other day.

All Sufferfest videos are worth it.

Sufferfest Videos: The Hunted, Wretched, Hell Hath No Fury, Revolver, Extra Shot
Non-workout Videos: When I'm just trying to get miles and/or spin for a bit I just watch TV or a movie.

Headphones: I found that a set of apple white headphones worked great with a 20' extension cable. If you're on a static trainer, that's fine. I got a bluetooth headset when I got rollers. It worked great for 8 months or so then the sweat finally killed it.

Now when I have to ride inside I try to ride over lunch when my wife is at work. No headphones needed.

I just use a cheap pair of SkullCandy headphones. They isolate noise pretty well and sound good enough for what your doing. Also a headphone extension cord helps stretch from my iPad.

I was just at a marathon expo and bought some Auria headphones (https://www.auria.com). They not only are comfortable ear buds that are meant to not fall out of your ears but they also give you the ability to hear ambient noise outside, such as traffic. Good for out and about but likely not good for your purposes since your trainer is loud. In that case some in-ear earbuds might be better for you.

BTW, Thanks for everyone's input for the videos. I had a look and downloaded a few! Looking forward to the suffering!

The first one I ever bought was Fight Club. It is still my go-to video. I love the soundtrack of this one...

My second fav is A Very Dark Place. The music, the footage (love Cobbles vs Cancellara)....its got it all.

Ear buds when I can't turn up the tele.

Wretched, HHNF, Angels, Hunted, Very Dark Place, Downward Spiral and use Long Scream for the monthly fitness test.

I have ruined more earbuds than I care to remember because I am a very heavy sweater. Yurbuds Ironmans are the only headphones that have held up. Definitely I recommend them for workouts, not so much for other listening as the sound isn't spectacular, but they don't burn out from sweat.

Rode HHNF this morning. At 100%. Big mistake.

Have This Is No Try on the way as we speak. Probably gonna get Angels, too.

Keep those replies coming.

And thanks !

Ridden properly HHNF is probably one of the hardest of the Sufferfests.

If you're going to purchase another 2 or 3, just pony up and purchase the entire set.
