I voted for Willie Mays, but that was after way too much serious thought about what it really means to be an 'athlete.'

I also considered Jordan, but I chose Mays because of the diverse skill set required to do the things he did. Hitting a baseball is generally considered the most difficult feat in sports, so there's that. His home run count (660) speaks to his strength, his baserunning and fielding to his running fitness. Not to mention his throwing ability and his unmeasurable qualities like poise and leadership. He did it all with grace, and he did it for 150+ games a year, year after year. 22 seasons in all.

Very likely. After all the pentathlon only existed for the 1912, 1920 and 1924 games. (The track and field pentathlon is entirely different from the modern pentathlon).

The Olympic accomplishments of Thorpe are in many ways blown out of proportion. For those in the British Empire the commonwealth games were the big event back then, not the Olympics. Winning these 2 events shows great all around ability, but for the mantle of best ever you ned both something like that and excelling in a single event. There have been decathletes that also won individual events. Thorp is not one of them.

Of course his football (gridiron) accomplishments were rather remarkable.

That explains why his career as a pitcher didn't last as long as modern day pitchers.

If I was the editor of that article(survey), I would sneak in Magic Johnson somewhere.
