Will 650b fit?
Hi everybody.
I'm sure this question has been answered a dozen times but I cant find any post. I apologize.
Im tinkering on an old mtb bike frame. Not sure of the brand but I was told it was gary fisher. It has 26 inch wheels and I am considering going to 650 b. My question is what is the measurement from center of axel to outside of rim? I have 14 inches from center of my drop out to the cross piece on the chain stays. Front is not an issue because I've ordered a low end suntour air fork. It seems like it should be simple 13 3/4 of an inch but the old 26 inch only measure around 11 inches and on my 29er it's only like 12.5. So I'm a bit confused. Thanks every one.

Why not stay with 26 inch?
Wiki has the info you need. 26 inch wheel has a diameter of 559 mm; 650 b 584 mm

So you'll need brakes that can adjust for that difference (12.5 mm)

Your problem will likely be brake pads hitting air instead of brake track on the rim.
Will they move up 1/2"?
The BSD's are 559 & 584mm or 25mm (1") difference in diameter. that's 1/2" in radius.
WHY? If you want a skinnier tire, 26X1.25" will work great.

It has disc brakes. I googled the rim diameter that doesnt help me. I suck at math lol. I need the distance from the center of the hub to the outside of the rim. I should be able to figure that out from the erd but I dont trust my figuring. I have two new deore hubs I'm useing for the wheels. I'm not opposed to staying with 26 inch but there real cheap single wall rims and I'll probably upgrade. So I was just looking at options.

Thank you i think that answered my question. I thought 650b were wider then a standard 26 inch wheel? It doesnt matter any way because the frame will only allow 2.25. I believe that's available in both rim sizes. Thanks every one

Add the nominal tire sizeX2 to that. At least on paper.....
26X2.00 tire =22+4=26".
26X2.50 tire= 22+5=27"
a 27.5" would be a nominal 2.25" tire.
A cruiser style tire would might fit where an aggressive knobby might not.
Other than being a lemming, what are you actually trying to accomplish?

what I'm trying to accomplish it to build 2 quality wheels that fit my bike and my wallet. If 27.5s will fit that's a lot more options to consider.

I would also generally advise against changing wheel sizes unless you want to repurpose the bike for more road/gravel oriented riding, in which case a 650bx42mm or therabouts would work without a drastic change in geometry.
https://www.bikecalc.com/wheel_size_math is a good chart. If you're running the same tire width, a 650B tire will have a radius 12.5mm larger than a 26" tire.

To answer your original question, the radius of a 27.5" wheel with a nominal 2.25" tire will be 584/(25.4*2)+2.25 = 13.75". So it would just clear the chainstay bridge if your 14" clearance measurement is accurate.

FWIW - I've converted three 26" frames/forks to 650b set ups. Older Ibis/Breezer steel, aluminum and titanium frames.
Anything larger than 2.0 wide tires won't fit or will be perilously close to the brake bridge of the fork/frame and rub. The tire set-ups that do fit are 650x47, either knobby or less than knobby of which WTB or Teravail are the brand tires I've used. There are a couple more out there, but not many. Oh, and these are 22-23 inner rim width wheels, narrower rims may make the tires taller.
I say give it a go for a faster setup on the road or gravel/light MTB riding. Save the 26" wheel set/tires for full on dirt.
