Sufficient threads showing for headset locknut?

Any rule of thumb for how many threads should be showing to get the headset locknut sufficient tight? I have four full threads showing. There is also a cable hanger but I need that since this is a cross bike with cantilevers. There is no hole in the fork crown so I can't use a fork mounted hanger. Obviously a headset with a lower stack height would give me a few more threads and maybe that's the best option. It's a steel locknut (and steel headset) as this is a Tange Levin headset.

That looks totally fine. I don't know how many threads even exist inside the locknut, but most of them will be engaged by the threads on that steerer tube. I bet there are even some locknuts that would be too short and the threads would bottom out before the locknut is tightened against the top bearing cone/cup.

If you got a nice big wrench and your hands are made of cement, it is possible you could strip the threads off the fork or out of the lock nut, but you'd have to be going well over the torque required to hold the headset tight.

1, Count threads in the locknut & compare ?

Lose the centerpull hanger in the stack on the fork and get one that grips the stem quill and you have more thread available..
Or,
fit Mini V brake, given you have cantilever brakes , then you won't need it..

Looks OK to me. Honestly you won't find much shorter than a Levin.

Mini Vs are great. Easier to set up and better braking than cantilevers, and compatible with the same levers. The only drawback is clearance for fatter tires and fenders. I think my mini-Vs have very little clearance for tires above ~40mm wide, so not great for bikes designed to do the roughest off roading, but will be fine for anything else.

If the first photo with the fingers and the 4 threads showing is ABOVE the hanger, you are fine. Locknut has more than
adequate thread engagement, but will probably have a small gap as it will be thicker than the the 4 threads showing.
Is there a lock washer also that indexes into the slot? If so, lose it.

I haven't seen a hanger that grips the quill. Seems less secure than one that fits the steerer column, though. I like the mini v idea but this is a vintage Italian cross bike so I'll try to stick with cantilevers.

I have a Pinarello Cross too , forbid the selling shop from cutting any off the fork

Paulcomp funky monkey 7/ 8 will do the hanger substitute nicely https://www.paulcomp.com/shop/compon...-cable-hanger/

QBP Has a TW sourced cheaper one..

I have a 9,5 Cinelli 1R,* that was drilled to be a cable hanger for my CX AlAn, it worked great ,
but I wished the Mini V was available back then..

* it is for sale,,

Yeah that's all there is, thread cup, hanger, and lock nut. There are no flats on this fork; don't ask me why because I have no idea. Maybe that was common back in the day on Pinarellos and/or Italian bikes? The bike is likely from 1985-1986.

Cool, thanks for the link. Too late to tell the shop to not cut the steerer column too short. This bike left that shop decades ago. I agree it's stupid to cut steerer columns short; I'd rather use a spacer or two. What kind of a pinarello cross do you have? I'm trying to figure out what I have here

https://www.bikeforums.net/classic-v...clo-cross.html

It's not a Treviso, but it's a Pinarello,
