Trouble with triple

I have a used 2009 Specialized Roubaix with Ultegra shifters and fr. The cables were not in great shape so Installed new ones. Since then when I shift from the big ring to the middle it goes straight to the little ring. Before the cable replacement it worked fine.

Is there a ratcheting mechanism or something in the shifter itself that needs attention? What keeps it from doing this in normal operation?

You may have too much tension on the front cable.

Disconnect the cable, click the small paddle until all tension is released, then start over. Find your instructions Manuals & Tech doc
