Raleigh Super Grand Prix
Received a call from a fellow ( referred to me by LBS) who has a couple of bikes he needs to move along. One is a Schwinn Moab 26" MTB of little value and the other is a Raleigh Super Grand Prix with markings that look like offshore ( I live in Canada) and maybe 80s construction. If it or its parts are worth a 50km trip, I may have a look. I noticed a Tange 5 tubing sticker. He wants to sell but did not mention a price.
What would you pay? Considering it looks like a 21" frame it would be a little small for myself so I would be reselling.

I'm assuming that the bike if from the Japan years. The hash marks on the head badge and the Tange 5 frame would indicate it. It is a decent little rider, would make for a nice college bike and/or grocery-getter. In my area you'd be pressed to get $125.00 for it.

I just got the same bike last weekend in 25 inch frame! Same paint job. Shimano drivetrain. I believe it was made in Canada. Mine now has cyclocross tires and mismatched rims. I condemned mine to a salt roads winter rider. My serial number is REZ 08546. Paid $100 CDN so the 4125 is probably about fair (probably more in April)

The Schwinn Moab might be the more interesting bike. Is this a steel framed one or the larger tubed aluminum one. Rigid fork? Did he send a photo?

The R in the Super Grand Prix serial probably indicates Canadian production. The Tange 5 tubing may just be the seat tube or possibly the main frame. A $100 to 125 price seem s reasonable given the clean and apparently undamaged paint necessary for re-sale.

Went to look at the bikes on Friday morning as set up by the owner. The bikes were cleaned and in decent condition and the Schwinn MTB with RockShox Judy forks was better than expected. Unfortunately he was kind of using me for more information and a free appraisal. He then asked to me to make an offer, and he would get back to me. As the conversation concluded he mentioned that they had belonged to a family member and were part of his estate. I got the feeling everyone may have thought they were worth a lot of money. You win some, you lose some!
