One of them is closing in on seventy and looks like he might be in his fifties. Was doing forty to sixty miles a day on average prior to all the troubles. He says all the cycling contributes to his good health, that he’s aging in “reverse dog-years.”
I really hope I’m in similar shape at his age...

Oh wow judging by the current polling results, I think that some people here have underwear older than other Bike Forums members. xD

Age is just a number it means you have a number attached to your being. As long as you keep young at heart and never lose your adventure spirit you are good to go.Arthur: "Old woman!"
Dennis: "Man."
A: "Sorry. Old man! Whose castle is that?"
D: "I'm 37!"
A: "What?"
D: "I'm 37, I'm not old!"
A: "Well, I can't just call you 'man'."
D: "Well, you could say 'Dennis'."
A: "I didn't know you were called Dennis."
D: "You never bothered to find out, did you?"
A: "I did say sorry about the old woman, but from behind you looked--"
D: "Well, I object. You're automatically treatin' me like an inferior!"
A: "Well, I _am_ King."
D: "Oh, King, eh, very nice. And how'd you get that, then? By exploitin' the workers, by hangin' on to our dated imperialist domga, which perpetuates the economic and social differences in our society. If there's going to be any progress--"
HELP HELP, I'M BEING REPRESSED!

The age range doesn't surprise me. The forum paradigm like this is old but familiar and naturally skews toward people who've been online for decades. Yeah, decades. The phpBB format has been around for 20 years now. And it's only an incremental change from the earlier BBSs and newsgroups, mostly adding back the ability to attach photos that was already available in ye olden days of CompuServe.
Forums like this, old newsgroups, and imageboards (various chans) differ mainly in ones tolerance for anarchy vs regulation. Poll an imageboard and the age range will heavily skew under age 30. And all male. Because there are no women on the internet. Ever.

When I first started cycling, most of the riders were in my age group....and still are. That was in 1974.

One sure sign of the negative effects of aging is digging up a 9+ year old thread to ask the OP a question without even quoting him. Be on the lookout for such behavior and seek help if you engage in it.

Your poll is rather bogus since it didnt have a place for 80+. Im 82 and ride approx 25 miles every other day.

Not just in here, but cyclists in general, I'm guessing. I'm 49 and I'm on the younger side in the local cycling club I belong to.

I wonder how many of us in the 60 - 80 demographic would admit to their age anywhere else. The majority of the riders that show up for local weekend rides up here are in the 20 - 40 bracket, and most of them think I'm in my 50's. If they can't tell the difference between a weak 50 y/o and a strong 72 yo, who am I to divest them of their illusions? Seems as though there are a lot of stereotypes associated with just about any age bracket. It pays to remember that they are just that, stereotypes. "Average" is just a statistical construct with no relevance to any individual case. In any case, nice to know I'm in good company.

I met and 82 year old gentleman a few years back riding around Lake Washington (55 miles). He had ridden coast to coast 5 times “across the continental divide” and was in impressive shape. That conversation coupled with his age made an indelible impression.
Actually I DID apologize earlier in this thread for the omission. If I create another poll i will exclude everyone younger than 80

Skewing old here: back in the ancient days, like the 1980's, the equivalent of Bike Forums was rec.bicycles.misc on what were called the USENET newsgroups for those who had actual Internet connectivity back then. No graphics, all text - same rants, same trolling!
When bike speedometers became something you could buy, I remember arguments about how (when they got advanced enough to do so) they should only show average speed over elapsed time, not just moving time. That was kind of the precursor to the Strava segment approach when you think about it.
Jobst Brandt was very active and I remember him saying what seemed like crazy stuff about wheels and tires and tread patterns - and when the bike world started doing actual testing, most of his "crazy" statements came true!
Don't remember any age polls back then (I was 28 in 1985) but the baby boom bulge just keeps aging, so probably the Internet connected 21-30 and 31-40 segments would have been leading.
