Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

High end nocostom steel frames $1,200 fair price

I am an old time fan of Mr. Ritchey and have loved his bikes for 20 plus years now. Is the road logic worth the price? It is a no custom Taiwan made bike.. Could I do better or is it as good as anything else out there sans the high end custom stuff. I know that Jamis, Schwinn and others make decent steel bikes but for $1200 complete.

I think it's pricey for what it is, a factory made steel frame (just like surly, jamis, etc). Ritchey is charging so much by banking on their name.

Umm. No.

Surly's straight guage 4130 is not a heat treated triple butted tubeset. Compare it to a Gunnar or even a Jamis Eclipse.

" ... steel frames $1,200 ..."

Are you fast enough to justify $1200 for just a frame ? You could get a whole bike for that !!

I can build a whole bike for almost free from broken/discarded bikes if I want to. I think speed has nothing to do with wanting a nice ride. $1200 for a frame isn't that bad. If you go carbon or titanium it can be much more.

If it were only $600, then for you it would be a no brainer. If an extra $600 ($1200 total) is a lot to you, then yes, you probably can do better. If not, get what you want and don't look back.

At that price, I'd think about a stock Gunnar (which costs less actually); you could pick up a custom Gunnar for that price.

I can't comment about the one piece Logic frame, but I had and loved a Ritchey Breakaway steel frame. Best riding bicycle, bar none, I have ever had, and that includes several custom steel frames, titanium, and high end carbon. I only got rid of it when I stopped carrying a bike with me on travel. Lighter than many other steel frames and super smooth riding. I imagine the Logic is just a one-piece version of the same thing. IMO it would be worth every penny. Also very classy paint job, simple but attractive. And a good buddy of mine like his just as well.

Gunnar Roadie $900 + Full carbon Ritchie fork at $400 = $1300. Ritchie Logic frameset = $1299.

Surly uses double-butted tubes in the main triangle of their frames, not straight-gauge, but otherwise your point stands. It's cheap steel. Good bikes, but high-end steel, like the Ritchey, is worth quite a bit more than a Surly Pacer, and is not "just like" it.

Curious what you guys think of this one. I've got a Wabi fixed gear and love the ride and fit compared to my aluminum frame road bike. My fixed gear is not made of the higher end steel that the road frame is made off. I'm thinking of building up a Wabi road bike once this frame is available in July.

Good point; I forgot to add in the price of the fork. Still at that price I'd get a Gunnar over a Ritchie.

So you're getting rid of a bike before you can use it much longer, because you're afraid that it won't last longer. Why not ride it out, rather than engage in circular reasoning in order to dispose of a perfectly good frame?

Too many openings where moisture=rust get inside.

thehammerdog and homebrew01, please stop turning every thread into "Should a high quality very costly bike be based upon ability?". Just one is enough, thanks.

You make a very good point. Until thehammerdog started the whole thing, I never even questioned the idea of owning the best bike I could afford and riding it to the best of my limited ability. On the other hand I am guessing homebrew01 was giving hammerdog a bit of the needle, not truly restarting the whole issue.

I too have been attracted to Ritchey stuff since the early days of my MTB involvement in the late '80s, and was excited to see the Road Logic emerge (re-emerge?) a few months ago. I was looking for a nice steel bike at the time and took a look, but decided on a more modern and unique frame from Breezer, the Venturi.

While the Venturi is also Taiwan built, I felt that it delivered more for less, notably in being the world's first ever post-weld heat-treated hydroformed steel production road frame. Other features like the hyper aggressive geometry, integrated headset, asym chainstays, curved seatstays, BB86, gorgeous paint job, that it was actually designed by Joe Breeze, and low production of only 150 total frames sealed the deal for $700 on sale ($1k reg).

So in short, I'd say that $1.2k for the Ritchey is about right and worth looking at, although I don't feel it offers anything particular or unique over other similarly priced and constructed steel frames. For me, riding the Ritchey name is worth a little premium, but I'd really want to know that Tom was involved with the design before actually purchasing.

is a Nice frame, but have you consider Ti ?

too bad there isnt downtube shifter bosses.

a Retro Downtube shifting, sloping geometry frame would be a really cool built.
