Driver Hits Cyclist In Bike Lane, Keeps Going As Victim Clings To Van
Lately, NYC has had a string of incidents in which cyclists have been KILLED. The driver is almost always let off easily. NYPD rarely makes an effort to fully investigate.
Most of these fatal car-on-bike crashes are likely not intentional, but rather are due to a driver not giving full attention to the road. Either way, the crashes should be treated with full investigations and harsh penalties.
Just yesterday, a driver INTENTIONALLY hit a cyclist TWICE. When the cyclist clinged onto the wiper blades of the van, the driver continued driving. When traffic forced the driver to stop he proceeded to drive over the bicycle. There were multiple witnesses and a photo was taken of the vehicle's license plate. Even so, the NYPD treated the incident as not worth investigating. Here's what the officers said, in the victim's words: "At the end of the questioning, they said that it's not likely that they're gonna be able to get this guy, because the company that owns the van may or may not give up this driver; they could say it was stolen ..."

My question to you is, what do you think is the most effective way that we, as cycling advocates, can make a difference so that cycling becomes safer in NYC and all cities?

Forget about cycling - as citizens NYC residents should make it clear that if police aren't willing to provide service - that tax payers aren't willing to pay their salaries.

Get NYC cyclists to call their state reps in Albany, the mayors office, and the DA's office, particularly if the DA is an elected official.

thanks for the link. Good to know stuff like this actually happens.
As to your question, I think the problem is that there simply isn't enough of us cyclists. If we are a significant percentage (5%, even) of the population then we have more voice, money, voting power, etc. Laws, awareness and infrastructure will follow naturally.
