Glad to have a C&V Trek in the lineup now with this '84 500. I like the marine corps red/yellow coloring and will keep the handlebar tape. I'd love to have a Lejeune someday, but finding rare bikes in tall frames is a challenge. I don't think this bike has many miles on it at all, as the tires appear to be original Trek brand and the black Matrix Strada rims don't show much wear.....BUT the rear wheel with a Mallard Helico Matic hub looks to be toast with a bad "hop" that's beyond my paygrade to fix. The seller threw in a couple of 27" Shimano rims and dropped the $130 price to $100, so I'm happy with it. Here are some pics as purchased

Getting very close to having a Trek 420 rebuilt the wheels are 700c as the bike came to me with a mismatched wheelset and I found a 700c front to match the 7 speed rear. otherwise a fairly stock 1985 420 including the Jim Blackburn rear rack. More pics to come when she is finished

With the 420 finished and on CL I spent some time with the 520 today giving it a few updates from its clunker challenge state so I can ride it this fall before a winter tear down. New: tires, pedals, saddle (the 420 got the Vetta) stem and bars.

I might be pushing the boundaries of "vintage", but here's my 1992 Trek 400. Lugged steel, True Temper tubing. Oddly (for a bike built in '92), the rear brake takes a nutted brake bolt. And it fits 700x33.3 Jack Brown tires under Shimano BR650 calipers. Here's how I ran her for Eroica California a couple years ago. Yes, I'm flirting with blasphemy by putting a Specialized crankset on a Trek frame, but --eh-- I'm 6'4" and 180mm triples don't come around that often.



But it is 64cm by 60cm for the top tube, with a 74-degree seat tube angle, so a bit too big even for me. I'm about to pass it on to a co-worker's husband who's 6'6" and it should be a better fit for him. (!)

What do you all have going on with that rebuild? I think I see XC Pro cantis, 6400 series levers and a Blackburn city rack.

It's perfectly rational to want one- Cantis are the coolest- especially the upper level Suntour/DiaCompe and Shimano brakes. They just look classy, the later ones are easier to set up and they stop better than most any rim brakes.

The bikes that would have those brakes are generally built to have long distance comfort as a main priority (excluding ATBs). The 520s, 620s and 720s are fantastic bikes.

Thanks! The shift levers are actually SunTour AccuShift, which (ironically) when run in friction mode have a very nice counter-sprung retrofriction operation to them. Similar in feeling to the Simplex retrofriction shifters, or the last generation of Campy before the went indexed.

Sorry; checked the photo again. I rode Eroica with the AccuShift shift levers, but the ones in the photo are Shimano 105 "1051" era.

Today's version of the Trek 500. I had some Sunlite yellow tires I bought back when youngest daughter Liz wanted yellow tires on her Grand Prix, and they were such a good deal I went ahead and bought 2 sets thinking they'd wear quickly...surprisingly they don't seem to wear any faster than black. I'll probably keep them with this bike. Using Fuji Supreme wheels while I'm waiting on wheel repair, but wanted to take this newest bike to the City to the Sea ride with my buddy Law @3speedslow from Jacksonville to Swansboro today at 2:00.



I don't notice anything unusual and it seems to shift fine ?? I'm pretty sure it's the original Sun Tour ___ from Trek, but I haven't been able to find an '84 catalog. Anyone have a link? The rear is Cyclone M-2 so I'm assuming that's the front model too, but some paint is missing.

I didn't realize the AR had a steel clamp! And I've got one sitting downstairs!

Now knowing it's an AR- and me saying it looks "out of place" is pretty funny. I just thought it was a much lower end derailleur. FWIW- that AR will work on doubles and triples flawlessly.

And now seeing these pix of your bike- those also look like SP-11 pedals! Dominate!!!

I think Suntour/SR dropped the ball with the possibility of naming the CR crankset the Cyclone- with the spider arms looking sort of like fan blades, you know, creating a cyclone... or maybe it's just me.

Sadly, their timelines are out of synch. Cyclone first appeared in 1975, the M-II in '81 (according to velobase), the Sakae/Ringyo CR crank appeared around '86, when SunTour was on the outs. I don't think Cyclone overlapped the CR crank by more than a couple years. But it would have been the perfect pair for an 80's Cyclone or the M-II.

Personally, I think the Sugino AT pairs very nicely with the original Cyclone (guess what I have on my '79 710?) even though, once again, their timelines don't match up: 1st gen Cyclone is late 70's, AT appeared in the early 80's. No wonder SunTour didn't survive...

SunTour already had a Cyclone crank before the Sakae Ringyo CR crank came on the market. This crank was made by Sugino, before SunTour became SunTourSR:



And the CR crank was modelled after the earlier Ofmega Mistral crank:



N.B. the Mistral crank is much better finished than the CR crank, which appears to have been "melt-forged" (aka, cast) and merely tumble-polished:
