I have a small number of favorite online forums:

BF C&V (for vintage bicycles), BF 50+ (for vintage cyclists ), PassatWorld B5 (1998-2005) generation (best VW Passats ever)

That last one has saved me a ton of money and aggravation over the years.

Welcome to the forum and go ahead and pick up some classic steel. You KNOW you want to!
Where are you in Utah, James? We usually do our annual family reunions somewhere in the state. This past summer's reunion was in Eden / Powder Mountain, where summertime mountain biking looks to be as popular as wintertime skiing

Very nice and well-equipped mancave there!

LOL, well let's just say this picture from my front door has Powder Mt hiding behind that cloud cover. Did you ride up Powder Mt road, it's a beast!

Came home to a foot of new snow yesterday and there's at least another 6 inches out there right now.

We stayed at World Mark Wolf Creek in August. I didn't bring a bicycle with me, but we did a fair amount of hiking and walking, both in Eden and up on the mountain. Beautiful area! My grandsons, age 2 and 4, loved Carver's Cove.

To bring it back to cycling, here is a shot of a mountain bike race for the younger set, on the Powder Mountain ski trails

If you ever come back to the area, hit me up. The Tour of Utah actually finished on race stage by going up Powder Mt this past summer. Great area to ride, mountain bike trails all over the mountains and the paved bike trail you probably saw by Carver's Cove is now about halfway around the lake. They get a few more miles done every year. This year they actually finished the piece taking it up to Wolf Creek.

Yeah -- we just missed the Tour de Utah by a couple of days. I thought my favorite hill climb, Tuna Canyon in the Malibu/Los Angeles area, was a bear, but Powder Mountain is twice as long and just as steep. I did see several people cycling on the road, despite all of the road signs saying, "Not recommended for pedestrians and cyclists."

I may well take you up on your offer -- this was the second time we have met in the Powder Mountain area, and my wife, an oil painter who specializes in landscapes, loves the area. We did walk a good part of the multiuse path, which handily led from Worldmark to the Valley Market. My father, now deceased, and stepmother have always selected great venues for our reunions -- Yellowstone, Yosemite, Monterey CA, Midway UT, Zion ... .

That climb to PowMow looks great, 3400' according to google topo maps! I'll have to try to work that in on a road trip at some point. I'm in south east Idaho so this is fairly close by.

So this just showed up for sale by my friends house, $199, always stored indoors, original owner, 1972 Raleigh Super Course, I talked with the seller, and I left a message with my buddy, hopefully it can all come together this weekend...

Welocme to the C&V asylum, and grab that Raleigh if its available. Super Course are one of the two great Raleighs I had the privilege of owning. That one looks to be in danged good condition, from where I am sitting.

It is now in my buddies garage :-)

I'll be road tripping down the west coast through some of december so I'll even be able to get some riding in on it!

So the plastic derailleurs on these early 70's Super Course, do they fail catastrophically leaving you sort of stranded on a ride? Or do they just shift poorly? Both?

What would be a "period correct" replacement for them? I have all sorts of derailleurs I could throw at it, but they're all off mountain bikes I have pulled out of the metal pile at the dump, so they longer cage than needed and nowhere near period correct.

I think Suntour from the Vx period on is just right.

There is a pair of front and rear on Ebay for $20 right now, the SC has a seat tube diameter of 26.0 according to an older thread here, and the derailleur is 28.6, but a discrete soda can shim can take care of that...

Perhaps I spoke too soon but Vx came out in '77. Wouldn't bother me a bit, just keep the original parts.

I think you may be a tad harsh in your opinion of the plastic simplex, but I will admit that I have been on the sun tour bandwagon for a long time..

Perhaps but I've had three front Simplex gears break on me over the decades and Delrin isn't going to stop degrading anytime soon. And performance wise, it does shift in a consistent, sloppy fashion, kinda like Campy NR.

I've found the folks here to be quite exceptional. It's probably the best forum I've been on in a long time.

Everyone needs a good vintage road bike. You know you wanna...

I did pick up the front and rear Sun Tour VX derailleurs for $20, but I'll hang onto the Simplex as novelties ;-)

I thought that having experienced the shame of pushing home from a destroyed delrin Simplex RD was required for admission here, Another vote for the Suntour replacements. All from hard earned experience.

Would it count if I rode the simplex till they broke, BUT, carried the Sun Tour VX with me so I could repair on the roadside and not walk home?

Get a Suntour with the Quick Cage and you might not even have to break the chain.
