Goal: 700 miles
Took Sunday's ride and did it the other direction. Way harder. There's about 4 miles of road between California State University Channel Islands and Newbury Park that are steep and twisty. There's even a sign at one end that says "Not passable for vehicles over 35 feet long." Going down that hill is almost fun, because, it's steep and twisty. Going up, not so much. I last rode this in this direction 44 years ago when I was 19. It was hard then. 4 cyclists passed going the other way, they looked like they were having way more fun. There were strong headwinds, too, which didn't help. At one point, a gust of wind almost blew me over, and I pulled a muscle in my left leg trying to stay upright long enough to give myself time to unclip my right foot and keep from falling down. I accomplished that, but then was too sore to pedal up any more steep hills, so I sheepishly walked the last half-mile to the top of the hill. I take no pride in that. Then I broke 2 spokes on my new rear wheel, not a happy moment, but they were adjacent, and the wheel was less out of true than my old rear wheel was with all its spokes, so I twisted the two together (conveniently, one broke at the nipple, one broke at the hub) and I managed to get home. Along the way I was riding a bike path and texting with my wife (major crisis, home Internet was down), and looked up to see 3 pieces of that plastic "Caution" tape stretched across the path. Too late to stop, I plowed right through it, and noticed they were pruning the trees overhead and had it blocked off. I turned around to find a way around it, and one of the workers said, sarcastically, "Thanks a lot!" I said, "Oh, sorry, I thought I'd won the race!" He didn't see the humor in that. The detour turned out to be a dirt stretch of what should have been sidewalk, which I learned a quarter-mile later, was laden with thorns. My back tire went flat first, and after finding the 6th thorn in it, I concluded patching was not an option and replaced the tube (after carefully getting all the thorns out of the tire casing). After I put that tire back on and inflated it, I noticed my front tire was flat, too. More thorns. Fine, used my second spare tube and hoped I wouldn't find more on the rest of the ride (this was at about mile 70). Mercifully, I didn't, and lived to tell the tale. wthensler , in case you're wondering, hydration was quite a bit more voluminous today. Started with the usual 2 20-oz bottles, refilled those at mile 60, one water, one Gatorade, refilled again and kept extra water at mile 65 (the San Fernando Valley was painfully hot today), refilled again at mile 90, got home with empty bottles, and just finished 3rd beer. No urge to use the restroom. Will be drinking a bunch of water this evening to stave off leg cramps. I'm almost to the point where I can look back on this and laugh (the beer helps), but not quite. Annnd, I still need 136 miles to meet my goal. Sigh.

Sigh.

@giffenf, loved reading your tale of another successful century. One thing that keeps me cycling is that you can never tell when a true adventure is about to begin. I had one earlier this summer when I flatted, fell into oncoming traffic, ran out of cell phone coverage, walked several miles, got caught in a severe lightning storm - all in one ride. Wife had started to panic and had actually just called the police as I walked in the door.....
Your reverse trip affirms the difference between a state function and a path function, which I constantly try to explain to students of thermodynamics. The state function (net elevation gain) is the same for the two rides, but the path function (one being way harder) is indeed a function of how you got there.
Anyway, huge victory under your belt again, great story, and you live to tell about it! On Sunday my brother-in-law wants to ride his birthday age (62) with 4,400 feet of climb in the cool fall weather in the Mountains of VA. It’s a beautiful ride and expecting crisp autumn weather. Hopefully not as eventful as your adventure, however.

Got rained out on Friday, but gave an optimum effort on Saturday morning and was able to peddle 52 miles on two different rides. Already hit my goal for the month and have been grateful for the good weather and most of all my good health. Lets see how many miles I can do by the end of the month.

I went back and found my goal for the year .
Old posts start dropping off , but I was able to find my post from 12-31-19 .
if I’d waited much longer it would have been gone .
post
“I didn’t think I’d get a hundred in December , but the weather has had some good days .
We usually don’t have as many good days in January and February .
Setting my yearly goal at 1500 and if I can get 300 by March , I’ll increase it .
Thanks Matt for doing this every month , it helps me keep going .”
I’m at 1439.6 for the year with two months to go .
I overdid it over the summer and had to take time to recover some .
I hope I’m back on course , it’s been rough getting started back , I’m having to break in my sit bones again .
One of my doctors told me once , “ you got to keep moving , to keep moving “ .
