MTD 445 miles

Today was to be the 62 miler for my brother-in-law’s birthday, but inexperienced riders and a course that was too hilly spelled disaster. Some dropped out entirely and the others lagged a bit. It was quite windy here in VA, but otherwise a great fall riding day. I felt great, was well rested and really wanted to get the full ride in, but out of courtesy I deferred and stopped with the rest. So took one for the team.

well , I screwed up this evening.
I had another crash.
what is it about October and crashes with me .
different spot but almost identical crash .
I went to turn around , and the front tire dropped into what I call the gutter . An area about 15” wide that separates the road from the curb .
I think I hit some acorns and the front wheel slid out from under me .

Once I got it together and picked up my bike . The front wheel was turned as far as it will go .
small hole in my left thumb where something cut a little chunk of skin out . My right elbow and down my arm has road rash . And my right wrist hurts like hell right now .
But I’m pretty sure nothing is broken. Just bruised up . Right knee is a little sore .
Tell I’ll really be sore next couple of days .
Just noticed my right rib cage is a little sore .
I had hoped to make my 100 this month . Now I’m not sure .

Hope you're okay, it takes only a second or less of losing your concentration or getting distracted or just plain carelessness; I second I tell ya!!! It's happened to me more than once and I hope nothing got hurt too bad! Stay safe and ride on!!!

Redemption day. Very strong ride in rugged hills, felt really great to unwind. It was a beautiful fall day here, but the gnats were everywhere. Check out my new bottles for the Bianchi. I set this bike up for the mountains with smaller gearing and shorter cranks, it rocks!

They say every accident is avoidable, but I firmly disagree. My first and hopefully worst one was being attacked by a wild dog. Sucker came from behind and side without making a sound and attacked. By the time he was caught up in my wheel it was way too late to unclip. Result, broken pelvis.

Second was a roundabout where I had right of way and a car didn’t stop. I purposely ditched the bike to avoid a head on. Result, broken rib.

I always wear a helmet and would like to think I’m a good, experienced rider. But you never know.

Even yesterday, in high crosswinds all I did was change hand positions to grab the drops and almost went down (that one would have been avoidable, I guess).

You are absolutely correct! Earlier this year I tried to avoid a charging dog and almost went into a pickup who had veered a little too much into my lane and something as simple as grabbing the drops, especially in high wind can do you in. Like you, I disagree that every single accident is avoidable, still we do what we can to stay safe and keep that concentration dead on and rock solid.

The wrist was better this morning, knees a little stiff as is the right elbow and arm .
Started taking some left over prescription NSAIDs that do wonders for my arthritis ,bruises , and aches .
I always heard of you get thrown from a horse , you get back on .
I’ll continue the pain killers for a few days and try to be more careful.
My bike suffered a few scrapes and scratches like me and now my shift indicator doesn’t tell me what gear I’m in . But it still rides and I took it for a spin .
BTW I almost always have on a helmet and gloves when I’m riding. Those gloves have saved my hands a few times .

One more good long ride and I'll have it. Not sure when that can happen, though. Maybe just a few at a time.

well , I screwed up this evening.

_____________
I hope you heal up quickly. I was thinking I’m overdue for a fall. And then I dropped the bike this afternoon pulling off the trail. Same deal...front tire dropped down beside the concrete...no man’s land. Fortunately I didn’t hit the ground as I was almost stopped. Put a couple of scratches on the rear through axle doodad but I don’t see anything else. Not even any shifter rash.

Glad you weren’t hurt .
That rough little drop off from pavement to the area between pavement and curb is a bike riders nightmare .
I had just swapped out the tires on my Specialized Hardrock back to the 26x2.5 Maxxis Hookworms , a tire I usually feel safe riding over that dreaded area . But this time involved leaves , acorns and a little moisture from the neighbors sprinkling system . A recipe for disaster.
If you ride it’s not if you’re going down , it when . Things happen !

Oh, no...it’s absolutely correct. Every bike accident IS avoidable...you just have to not ride.

If you ride, you’re going to crash...eventually.
