Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I also have a Snap. Works as expected.

I found it chewed through tires more quickly than my old cyclops dumb fluid trainer. Took a little trial an error but found a formula that seems to work:

Trainer specific tire
90psi
Two full revolutions of the resistance knob after contact with the tire.

Maybe. The Zwift experience is enhanced when the TRAINER changes resistance for hills, drafting, etc...

I think the main drawback to the wheel-on trainer has to be tire wear. Luckily, I have my old 1986 steel bike as a dedicated trainer bike that has not been on the road for a few years, and it has an old tire I installed so I don't care about the wear.

Certainly if you only have one road bike and will want to go frequently back/forth between road and trainer, it makes more sense to cough up the extra dough for a direct-drive trainer IMO.

Don’t have any experience with them, but Tacx vortex and Bushido can be had for $225-275, respectively, from some of the British shops (I think shipping is around $50-60).

As @datlas mentioned, dcrainmaker has quite a bit of reviews and annual <equipment> recommendations post that sometimes goes into way too much detail than I can handle. If the rumors of new trainers being debuted at Eurobike in a couple of weeks is true, we might be seeing increased number of direct drive trainers on Craigslist in a month or so. GPLama has a short video of brand specific “what to look for” when shopping for a used trainer if I remember correctly. Some of the newer trainers went through quite a bit of teething pains, so it’s good that he mentions the versions/build date ranges to avoid and such.

What he does, to wit, sampling from multiple threads across years, is different, annoying, and entirely beyond my attention span to follow. Anyone who does that here is dead to me.

Actually, he's a very nice, smart, guy whose training pedigree overlaps mine a little.

And thanks, all, for the trainer advice.

I use a Wahoo Kickr in the winter and the main drawback is the fixed cassette. First off, the cassette that came with the machine didn't mesh properly with any of the 4 bikes that i use it with so I put on an Ultegra cassette. Then I had to space to space all of my wheels to match so that shifting on each bike would be the same across the board. Once done, it works great but it was a pain originally to get all of my machines set up to use the same trainer with minimal fuss.

And it's not as if a sequential multi-quote doesn't provide the same context 99.6% of the time.

I checked out my rear tire on the Domane last night. Yup, I think it'd be best to swap the tires now. It's the prudent thing to do. And it also happens to align with my impatience to try out new goods.

@datlas I tried to find a pic of the Cannondale bag, but couldn't. I would have it in hand if not for an odd occurrence. It was packed, with other goods, and stowed in the belly of the aircraft, for arrival, from Maine, for a July destination wedding. The official story says that the pilot found himself locked in the bathroom, for 45 minutes or so, out on the tarmac, despite all efforts to free him. The flight was subsequently cancelled. The next arriving flight which might be able to bring said stash arrives in October, I believe. They flew out this morning, hoping to sell their rental house, pay off a largish credit card debt (don't hold your breath), and return South.

Talk to me about latex vs butyl and ride quality. I made it sound like I want to try it just because, but really I want to try it to see if the hype is real. So I want to get the best riding tire I can afford. I'm led to believe latex tubes give a better ride in both clinchers and tubulars. The daily pumping might just get me loosened up enough to proceed with a much needed stretching routine.

And now I will go ride, on my favorite steed, the '79 Trek 930. Too bad it doesn't sport tubulars.

That's less than a few hundreds, in my book.

I have a dumb trainer with power. I also have a groove worn in the steel wheel. Not sure if I'm doing it wrong, but @WhyFi's old tire would be on my trainer wheel, and I wouldn't sweat it until I wear out another tire. If said spousal unit wants a trainer, don't mess around with a lesser device, get one you want, and you both will be happy with.

Mainly, I want software-controllable resistance. This is what's going to make it fun for spouse. Other things, like more realistic feel are nice, but further down the list. 500 +/- is okay. As for tire wear, my dumb trainer experience with a trainer tire pumped rock hard and not too much pressure has been fairly good. The thing is wearing, but has another season.

Oh, another requirement is the ability to handle the 650b wheels on my wife's bike. They were put on to get 32 mm tires onto her old racing frame.

I've gone through two winters on the Snap. I don't have any experience with a direct-drive trainer to compare it to, but I don't feel like I'm missing out on the Zwift experience with it. It really feels like I'm riding up and down hills on Zwift and getting dropped on group rides for the ultra-realistic experience.

The biggest issue I have is having to clean my FD and replace my chain fairly frequently because a) my basement is damp and b) I sweat a lot. The FD starts sticking and I'm stuck in the big ring. I guess I should get one of those sweat thong thingies that stretches from your bars to the seat post but meh.

Again, I am fairly sure that any of the "entry level" smart trainers like Kickr SNAP or CycleOps M2 are reasonable, you may want to verify they accept 650b wheels but I suspect they all do.
