Once I have 10 posts, I can share pics of my 2000 Tourmalet with 28 Gatorskins. Not sure if that helps as I don’t know how similar the frames are but maybe it will be useful to someone.

Hey, this is my 10th post, so see below.

It’s tight. I can fit a 4mm hex key in the front. I can also fit a 4mm in the back... if I cut it in half.

so if you open up the brake calipers...what can you fit? 29's? 32's? looks like the seatstay bridge on the top end limits anything larger than a '28.

Yep, that's the limiting factor here. It's about 2mm between the tire and the little bump on middle of the seatstay bridge. I don't think there's any way you could get a bigger tire on it.

Those run pretty narrow ~26 mm. They're the perfect 28's for bikes that can't actually run a true 28.

Yah.. in that range. If memory serves, I think I measured them just shy of 27mm..26.6-26.7mm on a couple of wheels (I run GK slicks on all my road bikes..and have several road bikes)

2002 Buenos Aires

Bought this one brand new in 2002. Lots of upgrades over the years. Mostly sees trainer duty these days, but took her out for a spin yesterday.

01 zurich wheelset recommendations

I am looking for recommendations for new wheels for an 01 Zurich I recently picked up. I was considering Mavic Ksyriums and some internet searching indicated they might not be the best bet

FWIW, I weigh about 210# and am looking for something for group rides of 35-75 miles on imperfect (frequently hilly) roads. I am leaning toward 28 mm tires though would consider 25s, nothing skinnier and larger probably wont fit.

I would definitely consider used and would rather spend less than $500. Tubeless compatible not essential but probably not a bad idea, right?

Thanks.

Man, some beautiful bikes in this thread.

One possible issue is the width of the rear stays. At one point I thought of upgrading my old bike with more gears but there was some question about stretching the 126 mm width to 135 mm.

My 2001 Zurich is my go-to bike this week

I'm running Campagnolo Shamal Ultras on it, with Vittoria Rubino Pro 700x25mm. It's a super sweet ride.

Velomine usually has (though they appear to be sold out..call them and ask, they good with customer service) anodized H Plus Son Archtype 32 hole wheels on 105 hubs, double butted spokes, for less than $300. I have a couple sets and have ridden them for 2-3 years..very nice. I'm about your weight.

Picked up a couple sets of these (see link) over the winter(on sale). Again, 105 hubs, 32 hole DB spokes..they also seem to be running well and holding up well.

A neighbor friend and I were talking just the other day, while walking our dogs. Got to talking about bikes. He told about one he has in his garage, but doesn't ride much, and was wondering if he might get $300 for it. Said he got it around 13 years ago. Showed me a pic on his phone of an alpe d'huez 853 with carbon fork--looks like new. He is much shorter than I, the bike would fit my wife, but I would not take advantage of a friend. Told him to hold onto that bike-to ride or to pass on to a grandchild.

I have an old 80s Lemond Team Pro Columbus tubing made in Italy with 7sp Durace Groupo . After many miles of use the down tube cracked and had a local frame builder replace tube and repaint frame in pearl white.
Forgot what the original paint looked like. It did have his 3 TdF wining years on top tube.
That rode like an arrow on mountain pass decents although took some effort on climbs up passes with a 42/21 for lowest gear. No way that would be possible today with my abilities.

87 Lemond Team Pro, originally campy c-record 6 speed. 2020 still rides smooth, just a few more
paint scratches.

I guess my Zurich is the last one. Some guy had bought it and put it on the shelf. I bought the frameset and there had never been a bottom bracket in it. I have about 500 miles on it. It is built with oversize Reynolds 853. There is plenty of clearance for the 25 mm tires I run on it. 58 cm which I think was called "Extra:Large" at that time. I'm 6'4" with a 34"inseam and don't have any problems riding it at 75 years old but I suppose I'm more flexible than most. I set it up with a Campy Record 10 speed group. I'd have to go down and check but I think that I put a FSA Gossamer compact crank on it since I do a lot of climbing and it would have cost more than I have in the entire bike to get the Record crank new.

.

I have run out of room in my garage so I'm going to have to sell it off. As was said above, it steer WAY better than anything else I've ridden and the weight of it without pedals is slightly under 20 lbs which is lighter than my Colnago carbon fiber CLX 3.0.

As for Trek, Lemond and Armstrong. Yes, Armstrong was one of the worlds biggest asses and he hasn't changed at all. But MOST champions have to have large egos to drive then so hard. They didn't call Eddy Merckx the Cannibal because he was so nice to everyone. What in the hell business was it of Greg's that Lance was doping when the whole peloton was doing the same thing at that time? It was a lot more a case of Greg making a very loud issue of it and damaging Trek's name than Lance pushing them to drop Lemond.

Don't confuse that with my not respecting Greg completely and what he did.

RiceAway, lovely bike. I am certainly not being critical, I just do not like the look of the wheels. If I see a Zurich or an Alpe D'Huez in a 53/54cm, that looks that good, I am making an attempt to purchase it. Ergo, if yours fit, I would be sending you a PM. I have a 2003 Tourmalet , it is posted in this thread, and it has become my favorite bike to ride. It was in really rough shape when I got it, but I stripped it to bare metal, had it powder coated, and I rebuilt it with a mixture of 10 speed Tiagra, 105, Ultegra, and Dura Ace. Just about an hour ago, out of curiosity, I tried some 32mm Hutchinson Fusion 5 tires on it and they fit with enough room for clearance. That opens up other opportunities for riding it.

Thanks for posting that gorgeous machine!

If it'll fit your wife..offer him a fair price..say $500..or less..and buy it. If he's not interested in riding it now..chances are that may not change. As for his grandkids..it would be exceedingly rare that they'll understand and appreciate what it is and take care of it. If they are even interested in a bike, they'll be looking for the latest-greatest shiny object and wouldn't consider riding "that old thing".

Do yourself, your wife, and the bike a favor..buy it, ride it, and treat it well.

Thank you, Fishboat. This is helpful.

Is there a reason why you were looking/purchased the Blackset wheelset when you were happy with the H Plus Son? Just saw a deal? Any preference between the two?

No real preference between them..picked up the extra sets due to having a few too many bikes between my GF and myself. I lean toward nice, older bikes and they all need wheels eventually.

He's close to retirement, so doesn't get to ride that often. He has expressed interest in riding more upon retirement. Good idea you had there, though. I'll ask him to hold onto it, and if he doesn't start riding it, I'll make him a decent offer for it. My wife and I both have LeMond Renos currently, really like them, but an alpe d'huez would be a step up for her.

The 3 TdF wining years label probably was on the seat post on my bike also. Was the black background the only option ? I wish I had some pics of original frame paint.
