Bikes: Wow, where to start? A collection of 1980's and early 90's road, touring, and MTBs from the likes of Trek, Schwinn, Cannondale, Fuji, Miyata, Univega, Panasonic, and GT. It has gotten rather out of control.

Show us your Zebrakenko!

Well, since no one seems to like zombie threads, I'll start a new one to muddy the waters. I just found what appears to be a 1980/81 Zebrakenko Wind(based on the serial number and other research). Frame quality is pretty good from what I can see, but not Fuji/Miyata, etc. level. Very well spec'd out part-wise though. The most odd thing I notice is the downward sloping top tube. I wonder if that was the intention or if they spec'd a shorter fork length for some reason. Other pictures of these seem to match the slope I am seeing. This is one gorgeous bike!

Some interesting history here in this 1968 Kofu Bicycle(Kenko) catalog. Some cool cockpit ideas as well, way before Bridgestone's dummy lever setups! The catalogs of Japanese vintage bicycle

Nice find. I don’t recall seeing a Zeeb with sloping top tube.

Looks to me like the front fork may have been re-raked. That's more than I'd expect to see from this era and would explain a drop in the front end.

It's funny how it took a second set of eyes for me to "see" that. Now it is all I see.

It looks like the frame quality stepped up a bit when Ishiwata 022 was used. Mine is marked "Zebra Butted Tubing" and the cable guides are on the bottom of the top tube instead of the top.

Shoot, I wish I had a picture of my Zebra when I had it. It was a nice bike - Ishiwata 022, nice and light. High level componentry for the day. I couldn't bond with it, as the ride was a bit noodly, but did think it had many positives going for it. Just not the bike for me. Would still love to see pics of others, though!

casanewt , what's the beginning of your serial number? Mine's an '81, I presume, serial D1Bxxxx. It's 022 frame/fork, horizontal top-tube, fork looks more like niliraga 's. Has the same Suntour power shifters as yours, but LePree derailleurs, including a three-pulley rear.

No overall photos at the moment, just the detail of the cool seat tube label and head badge:

According to T-Mar 's guide, that should be a 1980. Built in 1980, either the fourth (D) fortnight (late Feb) or the fourth month (April).

'79 Golden Sport Zebrakenko Thunder

I think this was a 65cm frame. Got the bike for $30 then tore it down to clean and put on new cables and tires. Used it for a summer of rides to sand volleyball and errands.
Interesting mix of entry level tubing and mid level components.

Vintage Zebrakendo Thunder Mixte frame. This was given to me by a friend who was cleaning out their garage. Neat little bike, rides well. Looks pretty original.

Can you feel the THUNDER!!!!

Just based on the components and the color, I'm guessing that the year is somewhere from 1986 to 1988? It would help if you could get the serial number off the bottom bracket. Similar era Zebra discussed a bit here: https://www.bikeforums.net/classic-v...bra-arrow.html

Yes, T-Mar and the serial number list for Japanese bikes show this is a 1986, and he knew it was the model Excelsior. Serial number is D6B1626. Thanks for the response!

A bit late to this discussion...but my 1976 Zebrakenko Wind looks nearly identical to yours, with the most obvious exception of the bar end shifters. I bought this new in ‘77, and with the exception of the replacement seat (I still have the original which is in decent condition) and toe clips it is all original. Still have the spoke protector, though i have no idea what became of the reflectors (which came off immediately anyway).
