Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Curious how many miles you guys ride

Possibly been asked a million times here, Im curious how far you guys ride for at a time?

I clocked 282.2 miles since Oct. 4th. I average anywhere between 15-18 MPH depending on who I ride with.

I do about 250-300 miles/month. I have no idea how people can ride more if they have a family and a job ;-)

Usually 200+ miles a week. Sept I had 1029 miles, Oct a bit less at 971. That'll drop to around 600 as the temp drops

Train like a pro, miles are irrelevant. Only time and effort count. As a cat one, about 24h/wk. Tthese days, 8-12h/wk depending on the season and time availability.

My charts ... https://www.flickr.com/photos/machka-...321906/detail/

I see I haven't poste any charts for 2010 and 2011 yet. I'll have to do that when I return to Australia and get my other computer.

I started tracking on Strava pretty consistently since May of this year:
https://app.strava.com/athletes/143064

Since most of my "miles" are on the trainer (at about 12-14 mph) the hours are a better indication of what I do. I think that realistically my hours for the year are in the 130 hour range right now. A normal year for me was about 150 hours so 3 hours a week (on average) and at my normal pace, about 45-50 miles a week. This enabled me to race competitively as a Cat 3; I'd do 30-45 races a year (as part of my overall annual time).

When I tripled my hours in 2010 I upgraded to Cat 2. I downgraded in 2011 because we wanted to start a family. This is my first year as a father and the hours have dropped off a bit more than I expected.

I'm new to riding but I don't know how you guys do it. I've been off of work and have averaged about 20 km for the last four days straight. I'm kinda glad to be going to work tomorrow so I won't be able to ride. I know that the strength and endurance will come but right now the only thing I feel like doing is eating and taking a nap. lol
I'm more concerned with time spent on the bike than how far I've traveled. I figure that if I keep going out for an hour at a time and keep the pedals moving and try not to stop on the large hills then I'm doing alright. I will slowly extend that time but right now that's a pretty good workout.

Typically 100-150mi/week mostly commuting, rarely more than 250mi/week. If I didn't have 2 kids and a job it would be higher. My road rides are typically 40-65mi. My average speed for all rides, on all bikes, this year is a touch under 15mph (a bit over 6000 miles so far).

55 miles/week of commuting on the FG, then either a fast 50-60 mile road ride on the weekend or 15-20 miles of mountain biking (XC, lots of climbing).

Good lord! All of that on the road or a trainer? I don't have a trainer but apparently I need to purchase one to rack up some more miles.

I normally ride with the Mrs. I have a few friends that are older retired guys with plenty of time to spare.

I do rack up maybe 20 miles a month on a local mountain bike trail. It's more of an advanced trail that will leave me in pain after a few miles.

Anyway awesome job guys! I found the right place.

Edit, I average 15 MPH with the wife and up to 18 MPH with the older guys. One guy I ride with says I could gain 2 MPH with clipless pedals. Sound right to you guys?

Wow, sounds like everyone rides 5-10,000 miles a year. Where are all the average people? Ashamed to post this, but here are my stats so far this year. Oh to be young, single and care-free (or retired).

My second year of riding.

Sounds like me, minus the cat1 stuff

A good week is 15hrs and that's only once or twice a month max, bloody work gets in the way...
