1987 Stumpjumper - size and price estimates?
This has appeared in a nearby city, and I am thinking about it. The seller is not terribly interested in getting measurements to me, but I am curious. Anyone able to wager what size this is, and what the standover would be on it? It would be awesome if someone could say, "I have one in that size, that's a ___ cm/in, and it's about ___ standover."
How about the value - the seller notes that people are getting $450 for these but he'll take less. I feel sure he will - but if you were pursuing this one, what would you think would be a fair offer? From trawling the net, I believe this to be a 1987 Stumpjumper - but it looks pretty big to me, as in possibly too big for me to ride successfully.

It's the largest size (22-23"). Probably ok for a rider 6ft+. You maybe able to find a catalog scan for the other measurements.
During Covid, maybe $300-$400, now $150-$250. The rear brake hurts the value, the market you are in and whether it has been serviced (looks like seller only hit it with a hose).
I don't think it has original components as that rear derailleur is suspect.

It's a big frame. I'd say if you aren't at least 6' it's a pass. Bear in mind the top tubes are longish on these.
I used to have one, smaller than that, and ultimately I decided it was too big. Then again, I'm only a bit over 5'7". For what that's worth - sorry I can't be more helpful.
[edit] I sold this as shown for about $325 as I recall, but that was a number of years ago and in Chicago. I don't think I would go much over $250, although to be fair they are really nice bikes.

I have a late 80s Stumpy with a u brake. It's a 19-20 inch frame and clearly smaller than the above bike. I think it's worth around $200-$250 but you will have to be patient to get that price.

I would agree it's a large bike I have a similar same size Specialized they run about 22 1/2 inches with a fairly long top line and 31-32 stand over. So as said for a big rider 6'-6'4" or so. As for value with the nice paint needing a little work $150-200.

Thanks, all. I think I’ll pass on it, then - unless I get crazy and decide to convert it to a dropped bar gravel beast. Not likely, though ….

For drop bars, I would err on the side of a smaller frame, due to the long top tube. This goes for most mountain bikes, especially the earlier ones.

+1 the long top tube and the short rear chain stays with the bottom u- brake wouldn't work good for a conversion on this one..
