Well... In 1978 I flew with my bike into Oklahoma to explore the eastern side of the state. A map showed the quickest route included a road through a large Air Force base. I rolled up to the busy gate entrance in a long line of cars. Each employee or soldier would flash an ID to one of the MP's and in they went. When I got up there, the MP just waved me on. While I didn't think anything about it, I was riding a PX10 loaded with touring bags front and back. Anyway, I got about a mile into the base when a scene from NCIS popped up around me. Three police vehicles with lights and sirens raced up and surrounded me, and while not drawing any weapons, made it clear that they were ready to. They began questioning me - Who are you? What was I doing there? Was I alone? On and on. Shortly two more vehicles showed with some big shots who had many more questions for me.

After a long while they finally believed my story and we (mostly them) got a chuckle on how I made it into a secure weapons storage area. I was spotted on camera and the loaded bags drew extra suspicion to my motives. Remember, this was long before the OKC bombing, 9/11, etc,

Oh, I believe that MP that waved me in is still doing push ups.

Stopped once for running a four-way stop. I knew that the crossing road was closed because a bridge had washed out the week before. The cop gave me a warning and joked about making me start again from the bottom of a hill.

There are several suburbs around me that frequently pull over cyclists for running stop signs and red lights.
They set up stings on Sat/Sun mornings and usually target group rides. They usually make a big show of it and have signs warning cyclists, posts on social media, etc.

I think they usually just write a lot of warnings, but I'm sure some tickets are issued when they need to make a point.

wasn't pulled over, but involved a LEO.

Cycling back one early morning from a PT ride, a sidelined vehicle was distressed. Detoured my rides route to conduct a welfare check. Turns out the driver couldn't break the lugs loose. In the midst of assisting them, a local LEO rolls up & double checks us to make sure things are all well. less than 10 minutes & the spare was swapped over. Good start to the day imo.

I got pulled over and ticketed for riding double and running a red light (3 way light and I was on the shoulder with no cross traffic). At traffic school I was the only one without a drivers license. I was 14.

I was visiting daughter and family in Seattle, which I really didn't know at all. Rode up around the northern tip of Lake Washington and then south to the 520. I was making my way back to Seattle on the 520 when I noticed traffic was beginning to seriously pick up. I began to not be able to cross exit ramps without a long wait and then a treacherous dash across. I don't really get frightened by traffic, but this was different. Finally a police officer stopped me and politely told me that I really shouldn't be riding on the 520 and that I should call someone for a ride.

I was grateful for that "pull over." It felt like he gave me permission--which I needed--to give it up.

Actually, there's a lot the police officer can do. Failure to produce ID when there's reasonable evidence of a violation permits them to arrest you or at a minimum, detain you until you can produce ID.

I don't usually carry my wallet either, but I do carry an expired drivers license just in case I need ID. I don't know if it's good enough for a police officer, but it's better than nothing.

I think I read that there was a Supreme Court case saying cops can arrest you for a simple traffic violation. So assuming you arguably violated the law, which was the reason for the stop, those boys can always take you downtown if you become too uncooperative, even if you aren't actually breaking any other law.

if 18+, a US citizen is required to carry on person & provide legal valid proof of identity if an officer asks for it. A copy or expired ID DL is not valid.

Please show proof that this is required. I can find no such requirement.

Yeah, what if it's a Border Patrol agent axing for it? I'm sure lots of people would love it if you could refuse to show ID in that situation.

That's not true. US citizens are not required to carry papers.

How would one prove they're a USC without proper doc?

Yes. At age 20, I was riding a 1-speed Schwinn Cruiser through Newport Beach, CA in blue jeans and a blue T-shirt (wasn't quite a roadie yet). I found myself misjudging traffic in a busy 5-way intersection with a turn arrow, and then I heard: "YOU! WE WANNA TALK TO YOU RIGHT NOW!"

Two cops pulled up next to me, and asked me what I was doing riding my bike. Where was I going? How'd I get that bit of dirt on my shirt? Did I get it breaking into someone's home? (Yes, they actually asked me that point blank.) I was able to convince them I was not stealing, using, planning felonies, etc., and just out for a bike ride, and was waved on my way.

We really shouldn't have to prove it unless there's some valid reason an officer has reason to believe we're not a citizen. "There goes a guy riding a bike" is not a valid reason.

Probable cause, random mandatory traffic stop, or public safety to a suspicious concern.

One time during our Thursday Night Worlds, our group (probably 15-20 of us) were approaching a two lane highway and we got passed by an unmarked cop and he asked us "which way are you going?" STRAIGHT ACROSS!!! He sped up, popped his lights, parked his car diagonally in the intersection, got out and held is hands up to the highway traffic. THANK YOU!!!! YOU'RE AWESOME!!!!!
