Colin Laing Mountain Bike Frame

Recently picked up a very nice Columbus Thron frame made by Laing.
It has some beautiful features.

Hoping to get some info from Stuart or Ian.

Nice, I'd be tempted to put a disc tab on it.

didn't knew they did these as well. Are you going to make this another cool single speed, or geared this time?

Glad to see you guys appreciate it...

Not NOS, but still in nice shape. It's in transit now (seller's pics), I'm really looking forward to getting it in my hands.

I've been trying really hard not to add to the stable, but when I saw this one I knew it was inevitable...

Build plan is 2x8 or 2x9 with a modernish suspension fork, v-brake rear, and either v or disc up front depending on the fork.

I'd love to know when the frame was built, but it won't be a big influence on the parts list...building it to be ridden.

Just got some fantastic news from Colin's son Ian:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Steve. This head badge design was used by Dad after I had moved to Nebraska. It definitely is one of his frames. I can tell by the seat stays at the seat lug. The design looks to be very similar to the frame he made for my Mam. It handled very well as it was my favorite bike to borrow when I went to visit. Like many of Dads frames this one has lots of attention to detail. Any more questions I could only guess at. I do know that he made very few mountain bike frames. Ian

So cool.

Sweet frame, a 2x9 or 1x10 would be sweet. Keep the V's in the back, not biggy whats up front, disc or v's

Dad made several steel mountain bike frames over the years. The very first was for me out of Columbus in 1992 just before he moved back to England.
Ian is right that he made Mam a few bikes such as mountain bike frames which she would have ridden a handful of times.
cheers

Is that a 1" head tube? If so I have a White brothers magic 80 with very few miles on it that I bought for a '95 Indy fab that was 1" Let me know if you can use it. Beautiful frame BTW.

Stuart, thanks for posting. It's great to hear from you and Ian on this one.

I should have the frame in hand on Monday to check for a serial number. Hoping that will help me narrow down when it was built.

cheers,
Steve

redcaymatt,

I'm pretty sure the previous owner said it was 1 1/8"...I'll check for sure on Monday and let you know.

(Even if it's not, I can always use a quality 1" fork...I have lots of project builds.)

Thanks,
Steve

You have excellent taste...and I really like this frame very much.

A local shop just found several NOS 1 1/8 Tange prestige forks... Most are threadless though. Their price was quite reasonable. Happy to help if you're interested.

Ian or Stewart,

Any idea on how much fork travel this frame was built for? I'm guessing 80~100mm.

How old is it? I'm guessing 63mm, 80mm tops. I don't think there were 100mm forks till the very late 90's. My '95 szazbo was made for 63mm forks.

Thanks Matt...I'm really not sure how old it is...that's one of the reasons i was hoping for a serial number to narrow it down.
Ian though it might be as new as 2000, but wasn't sure...I'm still hoping to find out.

I'm guessing mid to late 90's from the lack of a canti stop on the rear.

Also tried test fitting some rigid forks to get an idea on a/c...420ish seemed to put things in a good proportion....but it might need more.

Not sure if it should get a threaded or threadless headset either...

Oops, found it. He did make the Le Colin bikes per this post. And apparently for many others builders. Still don't know time frame and why they were called LeColin. Maybe this was before or after Colian?

When Dad was working for Tempe Bike Shop in Tempe Arizona, he was using the Le Colin name. Le Colin name was trade marked under Tempe Bike. They put Le Colin stickers on bikes NOT made by my Dad. I can say for sure, he never made any Aluminum bikes. Thus, if you do have a mountain bike frame, that was made in Asia. I used to have one, but was stolen from my garage.
cheers

I just came into a Colin Laing MTB myself...

sorry to revive an old thread, but I just acquired a Colin Laing MTB on eBay that is almost certainly older than 1992. Unfortunately, I don’t think I can post pictures yet because I have fewer than 10 posts

Just go around and post 7 more messages complimenting peoples bikes or something, then come back and post the photos.
