I replaced my wheels with mag wheels so I never have to true them. I love to circumvent maintenance. The new wheels needed axle modification because they have sealed bearings which I prefer to ball bearings falling out onto the floor if you are not careful when cleaning and repacking them.

I suspect some bike shops have discovered what's called the Veblen effect: increasing the price of a good or service may actually increase the demand!

After seeing that labour rates in my car dealership were $120/hr....and replacing the turbo in my car was going to be 6 hours....I figured I'd buy the two specialty tools required and set to work figuring out how to replace a turbo on a VW.

Took me probably 13 hours the first time I did it, but now, (a) I have a couple of cool tools that get put to use on a pile of other jobs; and (b) I know how to install a turbo, as well as how to troubleshoot turbo issues, and how the whole intake and boost system works on my car.

If you view something as exorbitantly priced, you have the option of taking the time to learn how to do it yourself. You will make mistakes and screw up and cost yourself time (and probably some extra money when you over-torque a screw or something), but that's how you learn. And learning is fun.

I’m not sure if I’m more mad at myself for reading this entire thread or for staying in the room while my wife was watching “Real Housewives of Whatever “ on Bravo. I guess it’s kind of a tossup.
