Colnago Master Anniversary Edition

Can you please tell me what this bike is worth? Someone is selling it and I am considering buying it. It looks like near mint condition with campy record 11 speed drivetrain. I think it is either 2013 or 2015 edition. Beautiful paint and chrome . Thanks in advance. Campy hubs and open rims. Deda stem etc

Frameset alone sold for more than $3,000.00 in 2013 according to what little research I did. Add a grand or so for components. Condition is obviously important, so a thorough inspection is warranted, but the pics look good. I suspect you'll find it in fine shape. Can't guess on value but a couple grand would not surprise me.

40% to 50% of original MSRP. Very location specific. Such a bike sold in a mediocre market will not bring that much. Very few buyers at this price point.

In my own market, the highest price stuff is often the best deal. When I bought my Colnago, I was the only person to respond to the ad in over two weeks. And I thought the price was attractive, I just wasn't looking for one so I passed. Seller recontacted me asking for an offer. So I made one and bought it.

Good assessment. I rarely buy modern bikes any more but will usually shoot for 50% of new price for something only a few years old. A modern production steel bike is difficult to value because you can buy older bikes with similar quality for less. What is the seller asking? You can find a 1990’s Colnago Master frame/fork for probably $600 or $700 and it won’t be significantly different except maybe horizontal rear dropouts. Record 11 group with 5 arm crank can be bought for $500 ish. Can’t tell what wheels are on that one, so that can skew range of value on remaining parts $200-$500. Most of us here tend to buy bikes we get really good deals on but if I was looking for a main everyday bike to ride for many years, this one would be a good choice for me and I would be comfortable paying $2k-ish.

I bought mine new from Mike Perry of Maestro, in the UK.

I looked around for a used one, with the same components and wheels. The asking prices were high (I live in So. Cal.) and I didn’t want to buy a bike sight unseen where I could not personally verify the bike’s condition and its prior ownership history (too many stolen bikes out in the market.

I ended up paying a bit more for a new bike, but for me that was the cost of piece of mind.

Boy, these pics of beautiful Masters are making me get an itchy trigger finger. I've wanted a Master for a while to complement my Super, C40 and EPS.

They are nice bikes but the frames didn't change very much from year to year so, unless you really have to have that paint scheme, you can find them pretty cheap.

I never turn a road bike down on the fly that is good, and cheap, they just don't work that well for the kind if riding I do, but that is a beautiful bike.

The question is whether the bike is a collectors item, even if it is only 5 years old. How many of that model were sold? I didn't see anything designating an anniversary, but I'm not sure where to look. Some companies have a lot of anniversaries.

30th anniversary for the Master? 50th anniversary for Colnago?

If it is an exceptionally rare model, then you're probably best just hanging onto it for a while, and keeping wear minimal. Prices could be anywhere.

Otherwise, probably worth in the $1000 to $2000 range.

I paid my local bike mechanic to put it together for me.

The bike rides beautifully and it gets a lot of attention.

Like I wrote earlier, I would have bought a used one but couldn’t find one decently priced, so I went for new.

Did you buy the bike that you posted about?

I did not. I am still deciding. Like you I am considering saving up more money and just buying a new Master. I want at least the frame to be in near mint condition but it is hard to find one in that condition.

Check out Mike Perry’s website. You may find the right frame for the right price.

Good luck.

So, this is the bike?
https://philadelphia.craigslist.org/...773178787.html

30th Anniversary (Master). $3000 asking price, although the seller seems to be willing to entertain offers. Local pickup only???? Oddly the ad reads like an E-Bay ad.

I think you should ask yourself:
  1. Does the bike fit?
  2. Do you like it? Does it speak to you?
  3. What about the build and options?

Looking at E-Bay ads, the $3000 asking price is in the ballpark. Did someone say that a new frame is also around $3K? Plus, of course, the cost of the Campagnolo Record components?

What paint do you like on the Colnagos? New?? Old?

I'm not sure of all the different offerings, but there used to be a Colnago Master, Colnago Master Light, and Colnago Master X-Light.

Is that one just the basic Master? That really surprises me. Or, perhaps all are the X-Light (or there were problems with the lighter frames).

Oh, don't tempt me!!!!

If only it was built up with period correct Campagnolo Record.

Still, the groupset/build kit is likely worth close to $500, leaving the frame for $500, quite a bargain.

Hmmm, I was going to say that even the stem was left long, but it has a threaded headset.

A few places with paint rub, and shoe rub, but overall, not bad.

There is someone selling a nice looking 9-speed Chorus group in the classifieds, it would work fine with these wheels, you just need a 9-speed Shimano cassette.

Also, this Master has been listed for months and months, it started at $1900 in the summer, so perhaps the seller is open to offers....

Boy I like that one too! I am not a fan of the newer “riding man” top tube graphic and like the clover logo which went away in 1997.

There would be a lot of options. In theory an 8s Campagnolo derailleur (early 9s) + 9s Shifters will shift the 9s Shimano cassette better, although there was someone that posted having difficulties with that. Same should go with Campy 10 shifters + Campy 8s (early 9s) derailleur should also work with Shimano 10s cassette.

Assuming Mavic hubs, a Campy freehub may be available. I've also had some luck with swapping sealed bearing freehubs between brands. Or, one could swap rear hubs.

Or, of course, sell or repurpose the Mavic wheels and get the ones one wants.
