Best used road bike marketplaces? + how to pack a bike for post
Helloo,,
Can anyone recommend some solid marketplaces/ websites for listings of used bikes (is there a go-to for cyclists)?
-
Also: regarding shipping - any idea of typical shipping costs for USA or Europe to Asia and what is the key advice on how to pack a bike correctly for shipping, i.e. dismount tires and don't pack them (customs?), wrap frame and rims in bubble wrap, etc?
Is air freight is the norm or do most use marine transport?
Thanks!

Not sure where you're located, but I recently sold my Cervelo P2C and Specialized Allez Comp. I was not willing to ship so my options were FB marketplace and Craigslist. I started with FB marketplace for both bikes. Sold the Allez in about an hour - tons of activity with like 10 people in line. Was a bit of a frenzy, but in the end the transaction went smoothly. The Cervelo had lots of low ball offers, but after 2 days of nonsense, I listed it on CL. Sold the same day for asking price. Based on my experience FB is better for cheaper bikes ($500 or less) and CL is better for more expensive bikes ($1000 or more).

Bicycle Blue Book is another good source.
I recently used Bike Flights after selling my tri bike on a public FB group. After several tire kickers and no shows, an out of area buyer sent me money in 5 minutes. I didn't want to deal with the shipping but the buyer said BF was easy to use. Turned out if was. They charged $75 to disassemble and box it, pricing will vary. Each piece was individually wrapped and copious amounts of bubble wrapped was used. They obviously have a generous UPS discount because I keyed in the box dimensions thinking I could use my works acct. to save money. It was extremely expensive and their rate was about 45% of what my already discounted price was. Totally worth IMO. The only caveat for the buyer was reassembly. I don't know if he did it or a shop did.
If I buy used, I will use BF for the fact an LBS can inspect it prior to shipping. You don't have to use a bike shop to use BF though, you just end up doing all the work yourself, e.g. find a box, dissemble, ship etc.
