For the first lunch in ages ... I did not walk today! We're being battered by a major weather system which has been wreaking all sorts of havoc around the state for about 4 days so far ... and still going ... but today at lunch it was coming down like Niagara, and I just didn't see the point of going out and getting soaked to the skin.

However, the rest of the week I've been out and about.

We have been walking and using the "trolley" while in Orlando, FL. The infrastructure for pedestrian and mass transit (such as it is) is overshadowed by the massive autocentric mayhem. Example: Large Mall is on the trolley route, takes nearly an hour to cover the 6.5 miles to the mall. Driving takes 15 minutes, unless you get caught up in traffic (as does the trolley), no sidewalks leading into the mall area, however they are all around the perimeter... go figure.

I now have 3 bikes. The old 3 speed gets the least miles, so I took it out for light shopping.

For 5 hours on Saturday, we did a strenuous 8.8 km hike on the Tasman Peninsula.

I was on the road 11 hours yesterday. Started out on a recreational ride with some friends, then ended it with a downtown meeting. Did about 40-50 miles... lots of fuel stops.

Great weather for riding. Now carrying a tube of sunblock in my pannier.

I've been doing a lot of riding in the past couple of weeks, thanks to decent weather and a lighter work schedule!

Today's ride was kind of a milestone - my first 40+ mile ride in a long time, and a whole lot of climbing on a fixed gear bicycle. I did a loop to the Apple Blossom scenic drive, but still had a lot of energy - so I took another turn, and tooled around in rural Minnesota. The Apple Blossom route is nice because it's on a ridge overlooking the Mississippi, but I like the forest, too:

That looks like a nice area. Does it rain much there?

I'd say we have medium rain. There's occasional storm systems that dump an inch or two in a day, but it's nothing compared to the PNW or southeastern US. We get a lot of sunshine here - it's much less gloomy than the further east parts of the Upper Midwest - but more extreme temperatures are the tradeoff.

Did my usual walk of just over 2 miles followed by another small trek to the store and back of just over half a mile. I even took the bike for a spin for the second time this week

I walked past a tree and saw a white fuzzy caterpillar slowly climbing a thread up to a tree branch.

I walked several blocks to the canned foods warehouse, primarily for Ben and Jerry's ice cream but I found some other stuff too.

Those stupid cartons claim there are 4 servings in them!

The usual lunchtime walks looking for this and that ... especially a jacket I can use for hiking.

Plus a beautiful 7 km walk this morning from where we're staying at the beach, all along the foreshore.

Beautiful foreshore path ... and the beach ...

Yesterday did a short ride to the health food store. Felt tired after, so I called this my rest day. Today headed off to the lake north of the city.

Yesterday, I did a three-stop errand run with the trailer. I wanted more of a workout, so I bought the heavy stuff first and then carted it all around town.

Today, I went on a 35 mile recreational ride. I took down a big hill that has been giving me problems all summer, and my knee lived to tell about it. I shared the road with a bunch of (motorcycle) bikers and farmers, and am happy to report that the corn crop is looking good this year.

Total for the week: 31.18 km walking ... including 12.78 km on the treadmill, and 18.4 km in a transportational capacity of one form or another.

Today I needed to go ride up a big hill and get some food, so I took the long way to the co-op. (The co-op is a half mile away, and I usually walk. The big hill added 13 miles to the ride and involved crossing over into Minnesota.)

At the top of the hill:

The bluish stuff is the Mississippi, the hills are Wisconsin, and the area of concrete is the airport.

What I put up on my wall a little while ago
Walk report: QT->Walgreens->Home:
2.3 miles in 37:42 at 3.66 mph and 233 calories burned. These are legit, moving speed and time according to Google My Tracks.
I think that the calorie consumption is a bit low, but I think a HRM monitor is required to get more accurate results.

The last couple days I've been wandering about running errands at lunch, as I often do. I was in a shop looking for something else entirely, when I peeked around a corner and spotted something. An oven mitt. I picked it up, put it down, wandered around the shop looking for the reason I was in there, went back, picked it up, put it down, walked away, walked back ... and finally ... bought the set!

Today I went back and bought the matching apron.

I put in about 44 miles today. First, I decided to go for a nice 35 mile recreational ride with a stop for a couple of grocery items at the end. I wanted to get in a nice ride before the heatwave comes (winter is more my speed.)

Around 9 PM, I noticed that house was really hot. Of course the AC chose the only warm week this summer to break. So, I decided to go to Wallyworld and pick up a room AC. The trailer with giant flashing safety triangle made this trip pretty easy, though I got a few looks in the parking lot!

Walked to the Dr's today- 1.8 miles. Then went about 3 blocks in the opposite direction of home to the QT for a Mt. Dew (medical office visits always stress me out), then headed for home- 2.3 miles. So just over 4 miles before I normally even get out of bed for the day.

I went to the grocery store today. It's not terribly far but it's not just around the corner either. Got a lot of sun and fresh air.
