Pretty much my rule. Part of riding predictably is some hand signals to show others where you're going.

Has anyone else stopped to think what'd it be like if bikes outnumbered cars on our existing roads?

Mine would be: "Don't forget that you never regret riding on a particular day, but you frequently regret not having ridden because of whatever excuse you fabricated."

I occasionally drive or walk places and I get irritated seeing bike riders use the sidewalks and cross walks - gives cycling a bad name

Best way to avoid cars is to go fast.
The 2 most dangerous parts of my commute are 1-2 mile straightaways where cars can go anywhere between 40-100. The faster I'm going the longer a window they have to see me.
(obviously does not apply in areas with intersections)

"ride on the sidewalk to survive" I always ride on sidewalks when possible - keeps me as far away from cars as possible.
In our empty Canadian cities it is possible, with rarely any people walking on them.

I've got two (first is a nod to the first real day of winter here):
1. There is no such thing as bad weather, only inadequate equipment.
2. If they are going to kill you, first make sure that they are well aware that they are going to kill you, and also that they know that you know that they are well aware that they are going to kill you.

#2 is a good idea in principle, but it doesn't help with drivers who are completely unaware (i.e. texting)

oh yeah, that right there is a Cardinal rule
just got curious, thought this might be of a religious origin but:
A cardinal rule is the basic and most important rule. Cardinal derives from Latin cardo "hinge", so that something cardinal is important because all else hinges upon it. Therefore, a cardinal rule is a fundamental rule; a cardinal direction is one of the principal directions: north, south, east or west.

Is 'cardinal' somehow an opposite of 'ordinal'?
