Garmin bounced
On tonight's ride my Garmin Edge 1000 came off and skidded down the road twice. The first time was just after a rough patch of pavement. The second time, I was on a smooth section. I have never had my 1/4 turn fail before.
Has anyone else had this happen? I'm looking for a solution if anyone has one.

Does the 1000 have a slot where you can install a tether strap?
The Edge 820 comes with a small tether and has a slot in the GPS's body where the tether installs. I have no idea if it would actually help but I loop the tether around the bar and through the GPS before securing to the quarter-turn mount. In theory if the quarter turn failed the GPS would dangle by its tether.
If that's not an option, there must be stick-on cell phone tethers.
On the other hand, the quarter-turn mount shouldn't be letting go of the GPS. Maybe it's either time for a new mount, mount insert, or (worst case) a new back-side for the GPS.

Put piece of tape on mount in the recess to increase tension. Start with blue painters tape and move up to thicker duct tape as needed.

I use a recreational grade Garmin GPS, not a cycle specific one. Mine has slipped out of the bracket a few times, but I had heard that with my model of GPS it can happen so I always attach my GPS to the handlebar with a thin cord (yellow and black in photo) so it if comes loose, it hangs from the handlebar. And yes, it has slipped out a few times.

The only times I've had/seen a mount like that fail is when it isn't in all the way (one of the ears poking out) or one of the ears fail.

I had this happen last Sunday for the first time ever with my 1030. I’ve been using Garmins since the 305 came out and never lost one before. Wasn’t even much of a bumpy road. :foo
BTW, the 1030 has no place for a tether that I know of.

Odd, the Edge1K came with a lanyard/tether in the box and a loop on the casing.

OK, I just found out that the tether does come with a 1030 but finding out how to use it is vague at best. It appear there is an itty-bitty hole above and to the right that the tether goes through but it still isn't intuitive how it attaches. I'm going to find my lanyard and play with it.

I've got a box of Garmin mounts and parts because I've owned 305s, 500s, 810, and now a 1030. There is a lanyard in my box of parts but I don't know which Garmin it was for because I've sold all of my old ones. Regardless, I have my 1030 in front of me and if there is somewhere to attach the lanyard, I'd appreciate someone telling me where because I'd probably use it from now on.

If you lack something to use and it will be a while before you get to a shop to buy something, try dental floss. That is usually pretty strong. Might need a needle nose pliers to thread it. But I suggest that only as a temporary measure until you get something better.

Thank you all for your suggestions. After careful inspection of the actual mount on the bike I discovered that a small section of the mount had broken off and on the opposite side there was an invisible crack that allowed flexing on the mount. The result was that the Edge 1000 could easily come off. I found the lanyard and am now using that. I also replaced the mount. So far, all is well. You can rest assured that I conduct a visual inspection prior to each ride.
