My last post here was in November of 2017...not that I posted much before then but I did view this page almost every day......times have changed.....

In January of 2018 I had another heart attack! No biking does not fix your inherited chances of heart attacks. But my heart was strong from biking so that did help with the survival. About time I was recovered from the heart attack, my wife was diagnosed with cancer in February of 2018. That stopped my life for nearly a year. I was her care giver 24/7 until she passed in August. Since then I have been trying to get my life back together. I rode last week for the first time since 2017.....just could not find time and to be honest just had no desire. I road over 50 miles in that week. Does not seem like much I know but it is tough getting back on the bike. I almost lost my job having to take care of here for 7 months. I still have not had a vacation since 2017 bu this year looks promising.

I have since reconnected with a long time friend and college fiancee and we will probably get married this year. God has a way or working things out. Anyway life has dealt some blows but I am coming back, slowly but surely.

Good for you. I had a rough couple of years after years of poor health and ultimately a divorce, but bided my time wrenching and riding my bikes. 50 miles is a pretty decent week for me.

Welcome back to BF! Glad to hear that your on the bike again - a ride can be cathartic. Unless it's like mine today ... I washed and polished my bike yesterday and ran into road construction today where the road was turned to mud. Ackkkkkkk!

Piratebike, you are still alive yourself. Thanks counts for heaps. You also cared so intently for your wife before she died, and that counts a huge amount. Now it is your turn to live out you own life well, the way that you feel comfortable and rewarded. And yes, bicycle riding is part of all that.

I've been a boat builder on and off for most of my life and so have been interested in all things nautical. I have read a book on survival at sea. Most of the true accounts dealt with the sinking of ships when survivors had to take to lifeboats. A stark fact in those situations is that ultimate survival is not necessarily dependent on availability of food and water. Many people succomb due to apathy. Survival, even after many weeks in a lifeboat, is mostly due to shear stubbornness. So whatever potholes and bumps appear in the road of life, frequently our best course of action is to put one foot in front of the other and keep pressing ahead.

My personal take on these difficult and painful situations is that you have been fortunate to have someone in your life who cared for yor and who you cared about.

Thanks guys. I am used to survival situations. I have been a practicing bushcrafter for many years. I grew up in the country and certainly know about life and death. It IS part of life, death that is. We all know we aren't guaranteed tomorrow so we live each day as if it were the last. My problem is finding time to do all the things I love to do. I fill each day up completely.
