Very nice. You must have a willing 2nd seater to make it worthwhile.

I know in my own experience as a canoe owner that I'll never be a candidate for a tandem. I always paddled, while the 2nd seat hardly did so. So I know with a tandem I'd always pedal, while the 2nd seat would hardly do so. You ought to see my wife's Schwinn Jaguar 7 that was bought with mine back in 2007 or 2008. It must have an entire 20 miles on it.

My wife puts out about half my watts/kg. but she loves to pedal hard and make the bike go. I get fabulous training and a solid relationship. I'll take it. Usually the issue with non-tandem couples is control issues on the part of the stoker, regardless of sex. It's a communist enterprise: from each according to their abilities, to each according to their needs. Our method is to match HRs and she gets whatever she wants.

My wife and I took up tandem riding in 1983 and have gone through a few machines. My wife is an accomplished rider in her own right and we have had a few "tandem moments" over the years.

From yesterday's ride:

Trek Domane SL6

Traded my Defy for this Domane SL6 last week. I wanted something the would fit a fatter tire than the Defy to help smooth out some of the very rough chip seal I tend to ride on.

What width of tyre are you running there and what did the Defy limit you to?

Bought this one for my Christmas present to me. Surly Cross Check. Really been liking it. Finally a suitable sub for my much missed ‘72 Paramount.

Words of wisdom. Exactly our experience. This is about our 20th year on the tandem and we're enjoying it as much as ever.

Thanks! We've been running Conti 4000 IIS in 28mm year-round for a couple years. You might try them or the new 5000 tires. Very satisfied, no punctures, 1 sidewall cut in many thousand miles. Might be a revelation.

I'm seeing a few tandems in these later pages. We just purchased this one a few months ago, but I still haven't taken an outdoor pic:

Other than two other tandems, I'm still riding my single bikes from the '80s as well as a Specialized Rockhopper Expert.

1982 Trek 720

It was a cool and overcast day today in Des Moines. I did a 33 mile ride on the local trails and took my 1982 Trek 720 as I wanted a bike with fenders today. The 720 was Trek's top end touring bike in the early 80s (and later became the 520 which is still in production).

Add me to the Black Mountain Cycles fan club.
I finished building this today and thoroughly enjoyed a lovely shake-down ride. I retired a 1984 Batavus that I had built up with Campy 10-speed and moved everything over to this. Well, everything but the brakes; I had to get some long-reach brakes.
Sorry about the crappy picture. I think there was some sweat on my phone's camera lens.

Yeah I like the '83. The '82 was built around 700c wheels; the '83 was built around 27 inch wheels (though you can get some cantilevers to work with 700c). I actually own an '83 as well which I rode across the US in '97. The paint job is shot on my '83. I was thinking of getting it painted but then I found my '82 for $50 and decided to buy it rather than paint the '83.
