Trek 720 stolen from Long Beach convention center 3/26

Trek 720, serial number O25297, stolen from car at Long Beach Convention Center on Monday. Had front and rear Bruce Gordon racks installed. If anyone should stumble across this bike, please let me know. Any advice on what forums to post in? I know it is really hopeless but no harm in trying. Thanks.

As a fellow vintage Trek owner and spouse of a bike theft victim, I feel your pain. Bike thieves are still hung out west... or at least should be.

List it on Bike Index. Be sure to report it to the police. Around here they link with pawn shops to scan for stolen goods.

That was a very nice bike with some expensive upgrades, the loss of the TA cranks alone would make me cry. Best of luck.

Reach out to someone that is proficient with social media. In PDX many bikes are found this way, maybe someone at an LBS or bike centric internet cafe. Also monitor offerup, letgo, facebook auctions and CL. Sorry for your loss and good luck.

I don't have any advice to give, but I just wanted to express my outrage. I'm sick about this and it's not even mine. Gorgeous bike with tasteful upgrades. Good luck and fingers crossed.

You can also contact any moderator or administrator here to have them post this in the dedicated "Stolen Bike" subforum. https://www.bikeforums.net/news-annou...e-notices.html
Its a locked forum in order to prevent shenanigans, for protecting the posts, and keep it on point. Worth the try, its one more piece of free publicity and more eyes seeing your plight.

+1 for indignation and outrage about the theft of you bike. That is a really nicely set up and built bicycle. I cannot begin to imagine how angry and disappointed you must feel at the loss. I hope that something good comes from your posting everywhere.

I'm sure everyone here can imagine him/herself in your shoes and feel your pain.

In addition to the excellent suggestions already made, I would follow a few EBay searches; certainly the frame, crankset and racks at least. Then if you get a hit, deal directly with EBay and the police. Best of luck.

You can use Craigslist one or two ways. You can watch it for your bike. Or post it stolen and offer a no questions reward if you are so inclined.

I don't know how big OfferUp is down there but in Seattle it is THE place for stolen bikes. 99% of bikes (and probably other stuff) on there is obviously stolen.

I’ll be damned if I didn’t get a call last night from someone who found my bike AND found my listing on Bike Index. Pretty much totally stripped but does appear to still have the TA crank. Should be headed back up to Long Beach in next few days to retrieve the remains.

Congrats. It's not very often we hear of someone actually getting their bike back.

Well, haven’t actually got it yet but, I think I will. I guess a part of me keeps thinking there has to be a catch - who gets their stolen bike back?

I hear ya. My fat bike got stolen on Saturday. Hope it comes home. Previous owner, who's a friend of mine, had it stolen once also. Cursed bike.

Wait a minute, you mean to say that the PO got it stolen, found it, and sold it to you? That doesn't sound cursed, it sounds blessed - you should be expecting you bike to come back any day now!

The bike thieves obviously need a TA crank extractor. Hopefully they didnt strip your threads.

ugh, is that paint all over the frame? If i were you i would almost not want it back... good luck on the recovery. Hope you are able to restore her to her original glory. I had a bike stolen once, and it took a long time to get over it.

I'm happy for you and I'm sad for you.

I'm really sorry your bike was stolen, stripped of the paint, stripped of all the parts (and those almost irreplaceable GC450 brakes!!) and the heartache that's gone with it.

I'm happy you found it and I'm happy you're hopefully getting it back soon. I'm also happy that it's kind of beat up- now you can get canti posts brazed on!

Best wishes.

Actually, a buddy of mine got his back, in kind of a strange way (btw, this happened some 20-odd years ago)... My friend's Trek 1000 was stolen from the employee parking behind the pizza place he worked at. One night six months later, he and a few of his co-workers were walking to a nearby bar for some after-work beers, and found a transient passed out drunk on the sidewalk median behind the pizza joint... with his arms wrapped around my friend's bike.

I did recover the bike 6/25/18 and finally got it built back up (final details still pending) mostly from my own parts bin and those of two LBSs. Brake calipers (were not on bike when stolen) and headset the only original parts. I do have the original crank but didn’t have the correct bottom bracket to mount it
so went with what worked for now.

Looks like the paint came back looking decent. Judging from this tall frame and how the scum had it set up, I’d say he was a big scum in every sense.
