Lights 24/7. Have a plan B that works. Pavement is very hard, avoid smackdowns.

Be polite, be professional, but have a plan to kill everybody you meet. -- James Mattis
Oh wait, that's my favorite Communist quote. Cold War kid, don't ya know.

- It's sometimes hard to make myself start a ride, but I've never regretted having ridden.
- Be Prepared.
- Ride Defensively. That guy is wrapped in 2,000 lbs of steel, and I have a styrofoam helmet.

Ride predictably; show drivers that you're in control of your bike, you know where you're going, and you're not going to suddenly dart in front of them. (Also, don't suddenly dart out in front of cars!)

Newbie
I always try hard to evaluate each commute I make with respect to improvements for safety. Did I put myself in any danger as the result of a bad decision? I accidentally passed that car on the right as he was fixing to make a right hand turn, replay that event in my head and learn from it. Some bike paths I ride on are MUP -- did I put any pedestrian in danger? Did I pass too closely?
It all adds up to keeping us more safe.

I think this is key.
