“The Tone In Here” sticky posting
I wonder if Tom’s tone thread can be archived or moved? It kind of paints a permanent admonishment of the whole group and may dissuade new people from joining in. Or should I go marathon watch the Grumpy Old Men and Grumpier Old Men movies and embrace the curmudgeon monicor?

Seemed to me like a folksy way of restating the Golden Rule. But it did mention the important problem of "cliquish-ness" among over-50 people in modern-day America, which is an astute observation. Time for a ride, I think ...

For the sake of the newly minted Fifty-Plus, since maybe about 2015, See this thread, “50+ the way that it used to be.”
I joined BF in 2008, and found the Fifty-plus Forum an amiable place,
That thread, “A Chronicle of the 50+ Annual Rides,” used to be a sticky too.

Seemed to me like a folksy way of restating the Golden Rule. But it did mention the important problem of "cliquish-ness" among over-50 people in modern-day America, which is an astute observation.

50+ used to be like the bar on "Cheers". There was a cast of characters like the Deege and Denver who had distinct personalities. Topics were generally related to bicycling or ageing but not always. It was it's own place.
Some people didn't like that. They said they felt like they had wandered into a bar where they didn't belong. Their solution was to change the bar and they did…

...The big dust up was actually a confluence of a couple of events. See the stickie post, by Tom Stormcrowe, in the top of the forum threads, for a date to pin on the event(s). A few members didn't care for the "clubbiness" that evolved over the first years of the 50+ Forum. The things like Pie, pie rides, pie day, mentioning colonoscopies, Tombay falls and Club Tombay, rubbed them the wrong way. they also felt that these topics weren't bicycle related and should be eliminated/deleted somehow. Several folks got their feelings hurt, or just plain got angry about the tone, as Tom put it, and they either left, or got hostile towards others.
Now, we have some new folks that have come in as they found the forum, or some just hit the 50+ age and started posting here. They weren't a part of the original group, and don't carry any of the baggage or memories about who and what transpired here earlier. Most members don't care, or weren't aware of what happened, and other things drove members away. Some just lost interest in posting and drifted away. No blanket answers to the issues, or even all of the issues that have effected how the forum is viewed
Just what I observed over the few years I have been here, I cannot say that I am always happy with how things go here, I doubt that anyone is always 100% in agreement about the place, or who has an opinion. I have been lucky with the forum...

I think this Forum started well before I joined in 2008, maybe 2005?
What has captivated me most about Fifty-Plus beside the general milieu are (were) the Annual rides begun in 2010 up though last year. I have ridden in five of them, and have compiled the personal narratives of all the Rides on the thread, "A Chronicle of the 50+ Annual Rides".
I myself think this so-called "way it used to be" ended with the Fourth Annual Ride in Tennessee. BTW, billydonn was on that one.

I suspect that the clique that preferred that this list be an electronic Kaffee Klatsch to tell inside jokes to each other and discuss pie related topics and other silliness have moved onto Facebook where they can do their own moderation.

I remember some of the pie discussions, tomorrow is 3-14.
There are several 50+ and 60+ cycling focused groups on facebook, sometimes the couple I’m on have moderator enforcements applied.
Tom is missed by many.
Perhaps I’ll post a pie pic in one of the f/b groups tomorrow and ask if anyone knows what day it is.

They had a Google Group that Dnvrfox organized, but with the Google Plus demise yesterday, that is long gone. There are a couple of 50+ and 60+ FB groups, and some individual Bikeforums.net folks have pages there, that I read and follow. Dan Burkhart is a friend, as are a few others, we have managed to stay in touch.
I cannot understand what the issue is with being friends and having a sense of camaraderie with others in the forum is/was, but the complaining party will set me straight shortly, I feel certain. (Poke-poke-poke.) But, Tom was a close friend, I respected his leadership and he took time to correspond with me about things, as well as supporting me greatly during a health scare. I still love some pie following a ride though, Ain't never going to change this.

Hmmm... I don't have any issues with the 50+ crowd or the forum or anything like that. I fit right in as I'll be 58 next week (Apr 10th) and am still a bit of a Clydesdale at 6'0" and 210 lbs. I'm either on the 50+ forum or mainly the C&V forum as I still ride my beloved, classic, 1985 Fuji road bike, and refuse to go modern. (Toe clips and friction shifters will never die! LOL! 
)
The only forum that I do not bother with is the Politics & Religion forum. I learned very very quickly, that I am the polar opposite of most of the members over there, which can lead to hostile situations. I don't want to get banned, so I stay away and do not discuss my personal beliefs or any right wing leanings.

I, too, regarded Tom as a friend and advisor, who always tried to consider my concerns and supported my desire to understand decisions made in managing BF. I was and have been sad at his loss.
But I don't think it was just about cliques as a general principle. As I suggest above, it could be just human nature. Many groups here have some amount of in-thinking and before I raise a point in them I consider the potential outcome and whether the information I gain will be of sufficient value. By far I am satisfied in most interactions on BF.
If we are trying to cure grumpiness in older men and women, good luck. For me it sometimes doesn't even have a visible cause. If we're trying to cure frustration in younger people at the different responses and opinions from the older members here, again good luck. To the degree the former and perhaps current members show disrespect in this nearly-public place and its subforms, we were and may still be guilty. I try to work on that in myself.

I’ve been here a while, liked the 50+ camaraderie years ago, even tho never buying a 50+ jersey or attending the 50+ annual rides.
DenvrFox started 50+ (in a way) and many of his posts were very personal, non-cycling issues.
At times it appeared that a very few contributors wanted to ‘direct’ the conversation. Fine. But to get PO’d when things didn’t happen their way or criticism was offered is not very ‘Internet-y’. People move on, it’s life.
For my part, i’m most appreciative of the Pills and Ills subforum. Really added to 50+ for me to keep those type of discussions separate.
Disappointing for me is the lack of customers in Pub51. It’s unworthy of the title ‘Pub’. Nobody goes to the Pub for a little lighthearted reparte much. I’ve quit ‘drinking’ there.
I stay just for the bike porn. To me it’s an addictive elixir.
Life is good, bike on!
2019 50+ bike ride in the Puget Sound area. I’m hosting and will set a ride(s) based on the wishes of those who sign-up. One day or a whole week. Anyone? I know I can scare up at least 6-8 PNW BF members. All are over 50 years of age, many do not contribute on this subForum.

Clearly every medical reference shouldn't (IMO) automatically send the thread to P&I.
