Not advice really but memorable. My Father sold industrial pumps and traveled a fair amount. When I got into sales (in my 30's) and started to travel, I was telling him how I'd end up spending a bunch of money I couldn't expense. His response: "I cheated on every expense report I ever did and never once broke even".

My dad grew up in a mountain farm, so much of is advice is practical:
"Don't name something you're going to eat"
"Never save a piano from a burning house"
But his best advice:
"Never join the rat race. Just get a simple job & live a simple life. Get married, have kids, and be happy"

But what I tell my kids (I hope these have stuck):
1. Never let some one else's problems become yours. Lots of people have issues & treat you unfairly. But that's their problem, not yours - don't take it on by personalizing it.
2. You can't be exceptional by being normal. You don't always fit in, and that's probably a good thing!

‘’Nothing moral happens after ten o’clock, and nothing legal happens after midnight.”

(why I had an early curfew.)

Best advice from my Dad -don’t lie, no short cuts in life, integrity is doing the right thing when no one is watching, the truth is easy to remember, guard your integrity, work really hard, save and retire someday. Thanks Dad, great advice, I sure do miss you...it all worked out just fine and I am truly blessed.

@Prowler, do you want to weigh in here? You told me some wonderful things about your father.

Get a career with a full pension/health coverage after 20-30 years and retire young.

On being late......”Doesn’t matter if you’re 5 minutes late or 5 hours late, you’re still late”. This was when I missed my curfew by 5 minutes. The next time, I just didn’t come home, which made him a little nervous. Figured if I was to be in trouble for being late, I might as well make it worthwhile.
