Slight variation on an option above: you could run a SunXCD ring on a 49d or other 50.4 set of crankarms to mix old and new. A TA Pro 5 Vis ring might be a better choice as the SunXCD outers are ramped and pinned. Neither of those get you a narrow-wide ring if that’s what you’re after, though.

(I have a 2x11 using a 49d with SunXCD rings in order to get the ramps and pins)

ETA: might as well throw some pics out to approximate aesthetics. Ignore the inner rings...

11sp chain on SunXCD ring:

TA ring (though a 9sp chain, 11 should be fine):

Hopefully that’s of some use...you’d still have the holes in the “outer” ring for the nonexistent inner as a sort of anti-wart. Same with the SunXCD pic above. I know that’d bug me (re form and function). Plus 1x is a pretty odd use case for the 50.4 BCD. So, maybe this is a better example of what not to do...

Maybe a 50.4 to ‘other’ BCD adapter could get around that while avoiding the empty shelf of a double crank arm. Still less than elegant.

Spitballing some more...grind the teeth off a TA outer for a ~bash guard and choose an inner to suit. Maybe acceptable depending on taste and use. That opens the options to double cranksets at this point though, getting away from the original question.

I think I’d pick a chainring based on size and aesthetics, then see where that leads. Not that that answers the question.

Track/SS crankset and 3/16” ring? Okay, that’s full circle.

@pcb probably has some better ideas going by his builds.

What’s the bike??

White Industries has a square taper silver crank arm set, along with silver chainrings.

I didn't look too hard, but at least one of their models is setup for 1x, and good for 8-12 speed.

^There ya go.

It also looks like Sugino has/had track/SS chainsets with 3/16” rings. RD2 was one option. 130 BCD, so you can find narrow-wide rings but they’ll be relatively tall. Not sure if the Paul Components crank was offered with 3/16” rings.

Spend the big money and get the Chater-Lea cranks and pedals.

maybe even spend the extra for th contrasting hardware

was unclear to me on the pedals if they use a steel bearing cup insert or have ground the bearing cup into the stainless pedal body.

I recently put a SunXCD chaingring on 49D cranks for a 1x5 setup. I like the look of it.

It is tempting. But so spendy. The single though maxes at 40t. I was hoping for a 44-46t.

Anything in particular that makes a single chainring crank good for a 1x setup?

Nah. Mostly lies on the spindle for chainline and chainring itself. For example, the SunXCD I pictured is drilled if you want a double. The extra holes bother me. Petty yes, but I have nothing better to do.

I also don't want to "search", I want to buy. I just wanted to see what options are available, did I miss something.

Nope! I’m just unfamiliar with 1x setups.

I bought a FSA F Gimondi from Velomine a few years ago for $29 (on sale - they don’t appear the sell them anymore.)

The satin finish on those 49D cranks is beautiful. How did you achieve that?
Thanks,
Brent

I'll let Alex tell his method, but I have achieved a similar finish using red Scotchbrite followed by 600 grit followed by 1000 grit, and then Mother's.

In my opinion the new Chater-lea cranks are somewhat ugly. Besides the "CL" cutouts in the chainring, they bear no resemblance to the old Chater-lea cranks. The crank arms should be slimmer, and the PVD-coated hardware is gauche. The huge price tag and proprietary chainring/spider just detract more from the appeal. I like that it is manufactured in Britain, but for that money I would expect something more tasteful and in line with the spirit of the old brand. Some skinny brass-welded tubular chromoly cranks would have been much more interesting to me. But obviously in developed Western countries like Britain and the US, CNC milling on aluminum has a much lower barrier to entry than anything involving forging, welding, or fabrication.

Just curious. You could have gone with what your mom taught you, or a simple, I don't like them. So why did you spend the considerable amount of time going on about something you don't like? I may not like Hetchins lugs, but I'm sure as **** not going to write a paragraph about it.

I thought this is the place where we discuss bicycle stuff? Why wouldn't you write a paragraph about it?

On the topic, I saw Rene Herse is releasing (has released?) a narrow-wide chainring. That would be a temping one.
Grand Bois has just partnered with a French bike shop to commission a narrow-wide chainring for TA cranks, made by TA. Pricey as well.

Can you get a 110 11 speed chainring and use a common 110 crankset?
