Reynolds Assaults, are these brake tracks toast?
Someone I know is looking to unload an older pair of pre CTG Assualts for cheap. They've only been ridden in the dry but have heavy miles from a lighter rider. Would they be worth it or are these toast or close to being toast?

It's hard to tell from photos, but if you have to ask if they are still ride-able then I would be a bit weary of riding on it.
I have a carbon clincher rear that I recently stopped using after noticing that half of the brake track was developing a groove and was indented compared to the rest of it.

so, yeah, you'll get new wheels, but they will cost you.
i've known people who went through this twice before realizing they should be on other wheels.
of course not everyone that uses reynolds wheels will have warped brake tracks, and someone will chime in here about how awesome they are. from what i've seen and heard, i think i would steer people either toward used Zipps (check triathlon forums!) or new FLO wheels or similar.

How cheap?
The brake track has "some" life left in it. How much is up to you and your riding.
Reynolds used internal alloy nipples for a long time. I have had to rebuild so many of them it's crazy. If you can lay hands on them pop those velo plugs and look at the internal nipples with a flashlight and see their condition.
All that said - If they are super cheap then get them and have them as an extra set/race only and/or as backup wheels. Super cheap for me would be like $200

hard to tell from a photo, but based on a whole bunch of experiences of people i know i would have a hard time recommended reynolds wheels, let alone used ones. the reason is that i have seen a much higher rate of warping of brake tracks vs other brands, and when the brake track warps the policy of reynolds is to offer a pair of wheels "at cost."

The newer pair of Assaults I rode for a couple of seasons were fine, however. My understanding is they changed the resins to something better for high temps.
