Most likely a dumb question
I took one of my timing chainrings (40t) and put it on my triple ring and now I'm using it as my middle ring, works great. Now I need to replace the 40t timing chainring but not many choices out there. BUT I can get, at a good price, two 36t rings. Are there any problems in going from 40t timing chainrings to a 36t chainring (front and back)? Seems to me if the timing chainrings are a match they should work no matter what.

2 36 tooth rings should be fine. May wear a bit faster but will be lighter and the shorter chain will be lighter, too. (The weight savings will be minimal. 😀 )

As stated above no problem with 36 tooth rings. However your 40 most likely doesn't have ramps. You should be able to find a 39 middle ring. You could then move the 40 back. It should be a little cheaper then buying 2 rings. It also should shift a little better going from the granny to the middle with ramps.
