Pulled my latest find out and gave it a good look in the daylight, it's even better than I thought. A couple small scratches on each fork leg about 4 inches down from the crown and a small scratch on the LH seat stay about half way down. Only one scratch was through to the primer or base metal. Zero scratches on the main triangle or decals. There is a decal on the LH chain stay that says "Handmade by Kuwahara" in cursive script. I aired up the tires and took it for a short ride, it rides great all it really needs are bar tape, brake hoods, matching tires and a good cleaning and detailing. The worst thing I found was that someone drilled out the rear rim so they could use a Schraeder tube. 
I removed the kickstand to fnd totally pristine paint, not even the slightest sign of any scuffing! That made my day and yes, the kickstand is staying off!

Definitely! Although they had taken excellent care of them the couple I bought this and a Bridgestone RB-3 off of weren't really "bike savvy" and I was afraid the kickstand would be over tightened as so many are.The drilled out rim I can live with but if the chainstays had been dented and the paint had been marred from the kickstand i would been really bummed since the rest of it is so darn good!

Started work on the black Snel. It is Black Bike Month after all. 
Raided the "5 vis" box for a couple of Spécialités T.A. Cyclotouriste chainrings and a pair of nice Stronglight 49D cranks and put this together for my girl yesterday. She prefers a wide range double over a 'fussy' triple.

Put some new Fizik bar tape (white) on a buddy's Zinn last night. We adjusted his brakes, too, then went out to eat at McMenamin's and catch up on - what else? - bikes
I passed him some stuff, he passed me some stuff. This is a pal who is also into model building, too (my other vice), so one of my new acquisitions was a model kit of the modern Fiat 500.

Currently rebuilding a Concorde Gavina from 1988, completely repainted, this bike will be fitted with a Campagnolo Chorus Graphite groupset. Also nearly completed a Chesini Precision from app. 1984 with a Super Record groupset. And I still have 3 Gazelle frames waiting to be rebuild, a 1996 Special (once owned by the famous world skating champion Ard Schenk), a 1996 Team ForelDorado-Golff and a 1995 Criterium that will have to be repainted as well. Photos will be posted soon.

Today, I put my hub polishing apparatus back together after a twenty year hiatus. I will be able to restore the original finish of the hubs damaged on some of my vintage bikes. These are a few pics of the set up, and a split of the before and after on a single hub that was in the shop. Hopefully you can see the change in finish between the center of the hub and the non drive side flange. I only worked on this hub for a few minutes,, but with a good half hour of work they will be back to mirror finish and ready for interior bearing work. Smiles, MH

I suppose I should post more of my less conventional tools created out of necessity to restore old parts to new condition. This is one of those. It is a used motor likely from an old style furnace squirrel cage, a belt from the vacuum cleaner store, and a pair of L- brackets ( I think off an old car roof rack for bikes). The Simichrome works the best for the hubs on this set-up. If I were using some of the nonconforming shapes I could use polishing and buffing compounds on a buffing wheel like I do with golf club heads. But they are stainless steel and this aluminium alloy.
This will get me back to chrome finish pretty quickly and seems to work well. Smiles, MH

Well, I finally got my new chain shortened a couple links today, on the Killer V, so it fits without skipping, lol. 👍
I also swapped out the XT M750 RD for the older but cooler XT M739. There's just something about having chrome on your RD, that "feels" better. 🤔😉
After that, I spent about 10 minutes fine tuning both derailleurs, and test rode it some. My front was a little "off", and wasn't catching the small chainring. Feels great now. 👍😎👍

I got up bright and early for a ride the other day. Went out to the shop to get my Barracuda winter bike, and found this:
I've never seen this happen before. I rode the bike home from work the night before, no issues. But somehow, after sitting in my heated shop all night, the tube blew through the bead-rim seal, yet didn't puncture in the process. Weirdest thing I've ever seen... on a bike anyways.
Rather than taking my current project bike off the stand torepair this, I used the Saris Bones rack hanging from the trunk of my car. After examining the bead and rim carefully, and not finding anything amiss, I stuffed everything back in and reinflated, and then rode my 14-mile local loop to test it out. No problems, no worries.
Have any of you ever had one of these?

They have never gotten away from me but on the road I have to bring the pressure way down to get where I'm going when they do this.

First of all Merry Christmas, Happy Wrenching, everybody!
My $20 Super Course got an early Christmas present of new shoes - Koolstop brake shoes. I like the modern Shimano type pad holders with the spherical washer for easy toe in adjustment. I've been riding this bike for almost a year on whatever old hard Weinmann pads that it came with. A few weeks ago, I nearly scared myself on a steeper downhill than I was expecting. I have the dual compound pads on a couple other bikes, and like how they perform, so these were a no brainer. They came with a spare set of all salmon color pads, which I never have used before, so there is still room for experimentation. We both came down with some kind of stomach flu, even though we had our shots. I'm better, but don't feel like riding just yet, so decided to catch up on some maintenance.

I bought it because it's red, Mercier. The cranks have been removed. I just finished rebuilding the wheels and headset.
