Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Rear Deraileur question...

2017 Specialized Diverge Comp Carbon w/105-long cage-11 speed rear derailleur.

Been researching the Ultegra stuff. Hoping the more experienced on this forum can help me understand the difference between long/medium/short 'cage' derailleurs? Are there benefits to the different lengths? Compatibility w/my 105 11 speed setup? Getting ready to do some other work and a deep clean on my bike. Thought it would be a great time to learn more about rear derailleurs. Thank you.

A long cage derailleur can wrap more chain than a short cage derailleur; this allows it to support a wider gear range than may be possible with a short cage derailleur. The only downside to a long cage derailleur is that it will be a few grams heavier than the short cage version.
