Suggestions for Manhattan to Hackettstown, NJ
I'm planning to ride from Manhattan to Hackettstown, NJ. Any suggestions about roads to take or avoid, and places to eat?
Here's the route I'm considering:

There are a few spots there where it looks like you'll be on Rt 24 or 124 - 24 can get pretty busy - I'm not sure if bikes are allowed on there. 124 isn't as bad but not sure if there is a shoulder. There are some side streets that run parallel you may be able to weave through some of them.

Here are two other routes I'm considering, in order to avoid Newark and Irvington. Thoughts?

For a 50 to 60 mile ride from Manhattan, where would you go?

I would go with the 2nd route over the George Washington bridge.
About the same elevation profile and mileage. No need to take the
ferry or PATH train. And skips those neighborhoods you want to avoid.
Although it looks like you're going thru Paterson/Passaic.
They have plenty of good restaurants(I like Peruvian cuisine - El Chevere
is a decent place); but I wouldn't want to live there. This from a guy who
lived in Passaic for a few years. Still miss that house off of Main ave.

I try to be careful as much as I can. Don't wear any jewelry, ride in daytime if possible,
study my route as much as I can so I don't have to deal w/ getting lost/detours, etc.
It's best to be prudent in any city; safe or not. Having said that; I have gone on club rides
where we pass through Newark, Passaic & Paterson. We even stopped by in local restaurants
to grab a bite. And we're all still here to talk about it.

I've had good luck following this guy's routes from Morristown to Fort Lee. He seems to know the roads. Better than picking lines on a map, and "hoping" for the best.
HUDSON river @ FORT LEE NJ to> PATERSON NJ ; 15 mi. one-way (w/Q-Sh.) at Bikely.com
PATERSON NJ to> MORRISTOWN NJ ; 25 mi. one-way (w/Q-Sh.) at Bikely.com
His route peels off to the southeast of Hackettstown, but you'd follow as far as Mendham, then work your way to Chester and the end.
MORRISTOWN NJ to> FLEMINGTON NJ ; 40 mi. one-way (w/Q-Sh.) at Bikely.com

I do not think you will be able to cross the Passic or Hackensack rivers on US 1-9. I don't like driving it. There is a thread on biking from NYC to Newark You may want to look through that.
For my money, I'd use NJ transit to get out of NYC and around Newark and Irvington. It has changed greatly since I lived there. Springfield Ave is probably the worst way to go, I'd avoid it. You could take the Morris and Essex Line line from Hoboken to South Orange of Maplewood to by pass the not so good parts. Or if you must, use South Orange Ave to get through Newark, and avoid Irvington.
Good Luck.
