I rode them on MTBs from 90 to 95, then switched to SPDs. They work great, but can scuff up some shoes. They work best on quill pedals, and require a flat back to bolt on to.

I'm a fan, but probably only one of three in the world. At our LBS, even during the current flood of service requests, I "never" see any on a bike. I've seen one bike in 4 years with them. But I've had them on my two mtn bikes for the past 10 years and I'm very pleased. Of 11 bikes, none are 'clipless'. I ride the mtn bikes in sneakers so I like how securely the PowerGrips hold my feet in. I can power the whole crank rotation, can pick the pedals up easily and drop the pedals easily too. If I flip them over they are not damaged by taping the ground. Light, strong, works first time every time, fail safe and drains to the bilge.
This past Tuesday I used my 95Trek 850 to ride 100 miles on our D&L trail, along the Lehigh River. 8 hours of cranking plus breaks. Surfaces varied from smooth macadam to rocky single track. My feet were happy all day. My legs got a bit tired though. When I was done I racked the bike and drove home in my sneakers. Easy to live with.

Bikes: A few older US made Cannondales, a modern Soma Saga (no longer made, alas!), and one gifted crabon Specialized. Never enough.

As others have noted, they are great for non-SPD pedals. I used them before SPD became affordable in the early ‘90s through all sorts of rough treatment. They worked so well I added my original pair to my son’s bike a decade or so later, and he finally wore down the fabric.
Entry and exit is at an angle, a bit like clipless pedals for exit. Dialing them requires a little bit of trial and error, but once set they keep your feet nice and tight.

I used them from about 95 to 98 as a transition from toe clips to two bolt SPD, which I've used since then. Used them on a road bike and a hybrid.
