1997 Rocky Mountain Altitude

Hello gents,
Found this bike for sale locally and the bidding is up to 350 CHF (one-to-one with the dollar). Just wondering what the normal market value is.

This bike is special as it has Tange custom prestige super-light tubes. I understand that the stays can have a tendency to break. But I always wanted a classic steel mountain bike, especially with these tubes.

The past few years I've also seen a couple Marin Team edition's with the same tubing but didn't want to shell out the 1000 bucks they were asking.

Thanks!

I'm not that familiar with these higher end mountain bikes, but google showed one of these for sale for $700 in 2014 (not sure which country). As this one is up for auction, it will be worth what it sells for, I know that is not very helpful.

The Rocky Mountain catalog calls this frame "Tange Prestige Superlight Cro-moly". I have a couple of mountain bikes with Tange Prestige, I wonder what makes this one "superlight".

Edit: Another for $600 back in 2014 and another for $500 CAD in 2016

Tange Prestige Ultimate Superlight MTB tubing was even thinner gauge than standard Prestige MTB tubing. On top of that, the chainstays were double butted, hence the concerns. To the best of my knowledge, Tange never published weight specs for the set, probably because there were so many options.

FWIW, I'm a big fan of Rocky Mountain, having raced them (along with GT). Personally, I'd rather have this over the Marin. This bicycle was direct competition to the Marin Team Issue with with less than $100 CDN separating their $4200 CDN MSRP. The boon and bane of the Altitude is it's non-conventional component selection, which includes GripShift X-Ray shifters, Race Face crankset, Brubz hubset and Syncros bars/stem/post.. These avant-garde components result in tons of character. The Marin is positively pedestrian, in comparison. Of course, the unorthodox nature of the components can sometimes bite you, if there are issues and replacements are needed.

Regarding price, that is certainly reasonable, provided there are no major issues. I'd been taking a serious and very thorough look at it.

Edit: Just realized I'd typed Attitude instead of Altitude for the model name. That's because the Altitude does has attitude!

I've owned numerous Rockies, and am currently restoring a 1999 Element Race. The Altitude and TO's were great bikes, with liberal sprinklings of Syncros and RaceFace components which were actually made down the road here in Vancouver back in the day. I'd be all over that bike if it were local.

Thanks for the answers and guidance.

If you look closely enough, you can see that a lot of the stock componentry is gone. The gripshifters, brake levers, brakes, and rims have all been swapped out. That said. I am still interested as I really just wanted the frame anyway. I still don't know if I am going to bid on this one though. I already have two build projects lined up. But hey. Hang the frame on the wall and wait sounds good to me too!

I don't know what details they posted, but if its thin gauge like that I would ask about any dings if they haven't mentioned. I have a road frame I never ID'd that weighs nothing, but has some dings and you can literally feel how thin the tubing is. It really is superlight.
